Katakurs i Oslo KIME-NO-KATA WITH IURA SENSEI, OSLO, NORWAY FEBRUARY 2009 By Rosalie Evans Photos: Anne-Grethe Hermansen Iura sensei was so kind as to come to Oslo as instructor for the Norwegian Judo Federations course in Kime-no-kata. Sensei came on one of the most snowy weekends Oslo has had. So, in addition to leading the kata, he also got to see how true judo spirit can propel car after car out of a snow-filled parking lot! Participants, ranging from 12 to 60+ years met up on the mats. It was good to see how many dan grades had found the time to attend the seminar. If kata is to be standardized and taught properly, the trainers themselves must show an interest. The 4 youths who came to the course represent a new era in judo, in which training in randori, shiai and kata are available for all from the start of their training. Iura sensei had made, and sent before he came, an overview of the positioning in this kata, which is varies quite a bit. This together with the IJF 2 Nordisk katamagasin 8 comments on the scoring for this kata made a basis for introducing the kata. Iura sensei gave his usual extremely precise and clarifying presentation of each technique. Sensei s comments are very important, as the booklet of main points for this kata has still to be translated from Japanese to English. With such good participation at this course, the possibility of more courses with Iura sensei arises.

EJU KATA JUDGE JAAKKO HANNULA Jaakko Hannula here together with Anton Geesink, IJU 10th dan, former Duch, European World and Olympic Champion, now a member of the International Olympic Committe. Jaakko (Jaska) Hannula, (b. 1952) is one of Finland s two first EJU Kata judges, representing Finland as a kata judgeat the EJU Kata Championships. Jaakko started judo in 1967 under Pepe Pimiä. Pepe Pimiä was one of the first Finnsih judo teachers to spend several years in Japan to study at the Kodokan and Waseda university). Pimiä had the privilege of receiving his first kyu grades from Abe Ichiro, presently 10th Dan. All this probably showed in his orthodox approach of Judo. Pimä has been to Japan numerous times, often guesting the Kodokan and Waseda University. Pimä presently holds a 4.dan in Judo, as well as training karate in Wado under Suzuki and founding a Kendo club in Helsinki. Pimä says his main interest now is the social geography of Tokyo. As a member og the Finnish Judo Association Jaska has held many offices. Jaska was for a long time coach and president of the Helsinki University Judo Club. In the 1980 s he was active as regional coach and technical instructor and grading commission member. In the 1980 s he was also editor of the Finnish Judo Magazine. Jaska serves at this time his second term as the president of the Finnish Dan-College (Yudanshakai) which is the Grading Commission of the Finnsih Judo Association and also is responsible for kata activities and instruction. An active competitor himself, he took the Finnish Championship shiai medal in 1970, continuing as a competitor l 1987 when he reached the final at the South Finnish Championships. Using his competitive edge in kata, this year he and his partner won the Finnish Championship in Kata in Ju no Kata and scored 2nd in Kime no Kata. Jaska has degrees in Forest Products Marketing (U Helsinki), social economics (U Helsinki) and in Sociology of Sport (U Leicester) and he presently works as the director of the biggest Sport Clubs in Finland, Tapanilan Erä in Helsinki, with 8.000 members and about 20 sports. EJU kata judge seminar EJU KATA JUDGE SEMINAR IN ROME, ITALY 20.-22 ND MARCH, 2009 By Rosalie A. Evans This year s EJU kata judge seminar was held in the 1960 Olympic Games facilities. This meant that the dojo, auditorium and lodgings were all gathered in one area. The seminar was led by Sugiyama sensei(eju Kata Commissioner), Franco Capelletti (Education and Coaching Director of the EJU, Chairman of the EJU Kata Commission), Envic Galea (General Secretary of the EJU) and Cataldo D Arcangelo (Personal Assistant to Mr. Capelletti) who translated back and forth between three languages, and yet managed to attain a feeling of team spirit amongst the judges. A most impressive feat! Especially considering that the seminar lasted 10 hours (effective time). A new set of kata demonstrations was used for the seminar. A technique was shown, a judge asked for comments and a score, this was debated and a consensus reached. Then Sugiyama sensei gave a précis of the salient points and his score. Thus, a general consensus was reached on the scoring. Hopefully this will result in less variation among the judges scores in the future. The discussion of katas and exchange of ideas and information among the judges continued, of course, well into the evening, after the formal seminar was over. The last day was devoted to examination of new judges, and judges wishing to try for more licenses. New judges are very important, as a generation shift has started. The hope is for new judges to begin their careers before the older judges retire, so that the new judges may benefit from the experience of their country s older judges. This was a very good seminar, and one hopes that somewhere out there, someone is thinking about becoming a kata judge. If so, please contact one of the judges in a country close to you. Kataseminar i Borås Tekst: Åke Brandsell Foto: Åke Brandsell og Knut Harefallet SJF:s katakurs 27-28-29 mars 2009 i Borås, Sverige Denna helg arrangerade Svenska Judoförbundets Riksgraderingskommitté (RGK) sin årliga kata-kurs med Yoshihiko Iura, sensei, Kodokan 7 Dan, från Island. Kurschefen Peter Martin kunde under de tre dagarna hälsa alla deltagare välkomna. På fredagen var det denna gång ett extra insatt träningspass för Kata-landslaget som behövde extra support inför kommande tävlingar bl.a EM i Bukarest, Rumänien 9-10 maj och Nordic Open Kata Tournament i Borås, Sverige 5 september. På lördagen tränades Ju-no-kata av 20-talet deltagare och på söndagen Kodokan Goshin Jutsu av nästan lika många tränande. RGK vill tacka Iura, sensei, för hans skickliga och pedagogiska utlärning och Sabine Andersson-Schröder och Bruno Miletic för att de välvilligt ställde upp som uke.
Katamesterskapet Det første norske nasjonale Tekst: Rosalie Evans Foto: Anne-Grethe Hermansen RAPPORT FRA DET FØRSTE UOFFISIELLE KATAMESTERSKAPET I NORGES JUDOFORBUND Å få avholdt de første uoffisielle katamesterskapet i Norge var en av målsetninger for Teknisk Komité (TK) for 2009. Dette for å vise veien for klubber som kan tenke seg å arrangere uoffisiell kata NM neste år, og som ellers tenker på å arrangere krets- eller regionale mesterskap i kata. I framtida vil TK støtte opp den klubben som arrangerer kata NM. Det er utenfor TKs mandat å ha slikt ansvar fast. Siden kata NM brukes som ledd i uttaket til katalandslaget, må det avholdes før utgangen av februar, slik at man møter påmeldingskravene til EJU kata championship. 7 deltakerne, som representerte to klubber meldte seg til konkurransen. Stålkameratene IL judogruppa (Mo i Rana) stilte i 2 klasser, og TX-judo (Fredrikstad) stilte i 3 klasser. Dommersamling ble holdt før stevne med gjennomgang av skåring for de kataene som skulle vises. Konkurransen ble åpnet og dommerlag dannet slik at dommerne skåret kun de fra andre klubber. Fem klasser ble avviklet. Det var ett deltakerpar i hver av de forhåndsbestemte klassene. Det ville selvfølgelig ha vært morsommere med flere deltakerne, men den sparsomme deltakelsen trakk ikke ned på kvaliteten av det som ble vist. Særlig ungdommene var spennende å se på. Konkurransen ble avsluttet med oppvisning i Ju-no-kata av Michelle Harefallet og Madelene Rubenstein.
