Glass - Overview What is Glass? History Composition Manufacturing Glass Types (Note: Float Glass) Material Properties Application in Buildings Glass Types (e.g. Safety Glass) Literature 2
Glass - History How was Glass Discovered? With the following citation we may go back 4000-6000 years in history (Zerwick - A short history of glass, 1990): Who, when he first saw the sand or ashes... melted into a metallic form... would have imagined that, in this shapeless lump, lay concealed so many conveniences of life?... Yet, by some such fortuitous liquefaction was mankind taught to procure a body... which might admit the light of the sun, and exclude the violence of the wind... 3
Glass History Compositon How to make glass from sand silica SiO 2? Melting point of silica is > 1700ºC impossible in older days? How??? 4
Glass History Compositon Main component is sand silica SiO 2 Melting point of silica is > 1700ºC not so practically done! Adding soda ash (Na 2 CO 3 ) Reduces melting point, e.g. 800ºC Water-glass, sodium silicate, NaSiO 3 Soluble in water! not so practical either! Adding stabilizer, e.g. limestone CaCO 3 Non-soluble product (finally!) Typical glass composition: 65 % sand, 20 % soda ash and 15 % limestone 5
Glass Supercooled Liquid A Rigid Liquid A given deformation in glass which takes 1 second at 965ºC takes 1 hour at 538ºC 1 day at 427ºC 1 year at 316ºC 35 10 9 years at room temperature (!) 6

Glass Safety Glass What is safety?... May a glass be safe at all? Two/three important examples of safety glass: Heat Strengthened Glass ( Varmeforsterket Glass ) Heat Tempered (Toughened) Glass ( Herdet Glass ) Laminated Glass (PVB film between two glass plates) Combinations of Heat Strengthened, Heat Tempered, Laminated and Normal Glass 22
Glass Safety Glass Granulation of Heat Tempered Glass Impact from sharp objects Stresses in glass due to external influences, e.g. at glass mounting Direct contact between glass and hard materials, e.g. various fastening devices (typical metal without gaskets) Spontanous granulation (due to NiS particles) 23
Glass Spontaneous Granulation Heat tempered glass Thermally toughening, 620ºC (above softening point of soda lime silicate glass) β-nis α-nis Softened form of the glass contracts around the shrunken α-nis crystal Sudden cooling to room temperature Glass hardens around α-nis Too rapid cooling for α-nis to change back to β-nis α-nis must go back to β-nis (low temperature form) Can only do so slowly α-nis β-nis (temperature and time dependent, faster at higher temperatures) Volume expansion since V(β-NiS) > V(α-NiS) Glass breakage Test: Heat soak process at 290ºC ± 10ºC Conversion of α-nis β-nis goes faster at this higher temperature Note: T > 320ºC Toughening pre-stress begins to reduce 24
