SENSORVEILEDNING i PSY2014/Psypro4314 Sosialpsykologi II Eksamensdato 19. DESEMBER Instruksjon: Besvar alle 4 kortsvarsoppgavene i Del A. I Del B velger du 1 av 2 essayspørsmål. General remarks: Students are expected to explicitly address all sub-questions; student may - but do not have to - break their answers into sub-answers (i.e., a) b) c) ). Students may but do not have to use sub-headers when answering the PART B question. Oppgave 1 a) Hva betegnes som situasjon-person-debatt (situation-person debate)? The situation-person debate refers to the question of whether the person or the situation is more influential in determining a person s behavior. Fleeson (2004) describes the situation-person debate along the following questions: What is the central cause of behavior: Person or Situation? Are multiple behaviors of one individual similar or variable? Is describing an individual s way of acting useful or not useful? What is the appropriate focus of study, structure of differences between people or reactions to situations? b) Evidence that highlights cross-situational variability / within person variability: Fleeson (2004) presents a figure (Fig. 2, based on Fleeson, 2001) on within-and between-person variability in behavior and affect: The typical person s behavior differs as much from occasion to occasion as does his or her emotion, and more than the amount people differ from each other on average. c) Evidence that highlights temporal stability and cross-situational stability (between person variability): Fleeson (2004) presents a figure (Fig. 3) that illustrates participants average level of extraversion in two different weeks: How participants acted in one week was highly similar to how they acted in the other week. Pensum: Fleeson, W. (2004). Moving Personality Beyond the Person-Situation Debate The Challenge and the Opportunity of Within-Person Variability. Current Directions in Psychological Science, 13(2), 83 87. Ref:
Gawronski, B., & Bodenhausen, G. V. (2007). Unraveling the Processes Underlying Evaluation: Attitudes from the Perspective of the Ape Model. Social Cognition, 25(5), 687 717. The associative-propositional evaluation (APE) model is a dual-process theory that specifies the relation between explicit and implicit evaluations. These are the product of two functionally distinct mental processes: Implicit (spontaneous) evaluations as the outcome of associative processes, explicit (deliberate) evaluations as the outcome of propositional processes. Associative processes = activation of associations on the basis of feature similarity and spatio-temporal contiguity during learning. Propositional processes = validation of activated information on the basis of principles of cognitive consistency. Oppgave 3. Students may choose - Operationalization of lies (refers to issues of definition; too limited vs. too broad definitions; consciousness of intention/anticipated consequences); problem of a lie not necessarily being observable ( lie as inference); - When investigating lie-telling: paradox of asking people to tell the truth about your lie-telling behaviour ; more broadly How to examine an object that by definition is meant to be hidden? ; perspective (person accused of lying person that was possibly lied to observer) can influence whether a behaviour is perceived/ judged as lying behaviour; - When investigating lie-detection: How to produce/select the stimulus material? Lying as a social interaction how to model that experimentally? Stereotype of the liar influences both, the production of lies and the perception of lies. Pensum: Bond Jr., C. F. D., & DePaulo, B. M. (2006). Accuracy of Deception Judgments. Personality & Social Psychology Review, 10(3), 214 234. doi:10.1207/s15327957pspr1003_2 DePaulo, B. M., & Kashy, D. A. (1998). Everyday lies in close and casual relationships. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 74(1), 63 79. doi:10.1037/0022-3514.74.1.63 Oppgave 4. A) Briefly explain the contribution of evolutionary psychology to the understanding of cognitive bias. B) Provide examples from two research areas within social perception and selfperception that have studied cognitive biases. Pensum: Haselton, M. & Nettle. D. (2006) The paranoid optimist: An integrative evolutionary model of cognitive biases. Personality and Social Psychoogical Review, 10, 47-66.
The Part B answer shall be evaluated on four dimensions, namely content, argument, organization and style/format. The questions below are given as a guideline. As a general rule, more emphasis shall be put on content (ca. 40%) and argument (ca. 30%) than on organization (ca. 25%) and style/format (ca. 5%) when assigning the grade. Students have been informed of the evaluation scheme by the course coordinator. Guideline questions for the four dimensions are: 1. CONTENT Does the student present relevant material selected from the course literature? Is the material presented correctly? Does the student integrate the material? Does the student critically evaluate the material? Does the student demonstrate an understanding of the topic area? 2. ARGUMENT Was an argument developed and critically analyzed? Is the argument logically consistent? Are major counter arguments taken into account? 3. ORGANIZATION Is there a systematic exposition of ideas, not straying from the topic and leading to a conclusion? Is the answer well structured and understandable? 4. STYLE/FORMAT Evaluation of style/format should mainly focus on intelligibility of expression; literacy and grammar.
Read the excerpt from a newspaper article in the appendix (Appendix A). Based on social psychological theory and findings, discuss and evaluate the conclusion that this is how language contributes to the dehumanization of Norway s largest minority. For CONTENT: Students are expected to define Outgroup Dehumanization (and to distinguish it from Ingroup Humanization) within the framework of intergroup relations; Students are expected to review the stereotype content model (Does Status & Competition predict typicality and humanness ratings of stereotypical traits for in- and outgroup? => Low status seems to be a sufficient condition for outgroup dehumanization to occur); Students are expected to re-formulate the argument covered by the appended excerpt within this framework. In addition, the term bruker can be discussed on the background of the Linguistic Category Model and the linguistic intergroup bias. Del B: Students are expected to describe the immediate (reflexive), reflective and long-term (in case of chronic ostracism) consequences of social exclusion. Being ignored, excluded, and/or rejected signals a threat for which reflexive detection in the form of pain and distress is adaptive for survival. Brief ostracism episodes result in sadness and anger and threaten fundamental needs. Individuals then act to fortify or replenish their thwarted need or needs. Behavioral consequences appear to be split into two general categories: attempts to fortify relational needs (belonging, self-esteem, shared understanding, and trust), which lead generally to pro-social thoughts and behaviors, or attempts to fortify efficacy/ existence needs of control and recognition that may be dealt with most efficiently through antisocial thoughts and behaviors. Sex differences are found particularly
in the reflective stage of ball-tossing (girls are more willing to tend-and-befriend than boys according to Williams & Sommer, 1997). But in most experimental paradigms there are few, if any sex differences. Relevant from course material: Baumeister, R. F., & Leary, M. R. (1995).
