St. Peter Refugee Resettlement Ministry Accompanies Afghan Families By Martha Schmi, Ministry, Chair of St Peter Migrant and Refugee and Commiee We are currently mentoring 3 families and waing for our 4 th and 5 th. Catholic Charies is in great need of our services; they asked us to mentor 2 more families. This week is a good week to describe all the things we are doing for them. It is truly inspiraonal to see fellow parishioners give of themselves to this degree. 1. Met with one family to get started on their financial independence, budgeng, services to help, etc. 2. Took 2 women to the Galilee Center for their ESL placement exams 3. Took 1 mother for an eye exam 4. Babysat 3 children while Mom had an appt. 5. Will take 4 children to family clinic for doctor s check ups 6. Researched and set up driving lessons for one dad 7. Got a baby swing for one child 8. Organized a trip to children s museum for one family 9. Took one father to work on Saturday because bus did not show up 10. Set up a bank account for one family 11. Applied for birth cerficate for one baby And this is only 1 week of work that has been done or will be done! The families are so appreciave and so in need of having someone help them navigate their new country. Right now we are developing a strong resource guide to help our families access services in the community. They are living way below the poverty line so will need all the assistance they can get. They are from a culture where the women were not highly educated if at all and did not work.they also have young children. So they are relying on the income of one person in an hourly job. The federal government provides funds for a 3 month period. So these families will be financially on their own from this point forward with sll some help with rent and ulies through March even though the me period for CC was the end of February. Hard work has been done by the volunteers on Team 1 and Team 2 in preparaon for this change. We will sll be with these families to help them through this. If you would like to become a mentor volunteer, please contact Martha Schmi at schmi.martha@gmail.com Daily Offering Prayer God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, acons, joys and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus Heart, who connues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvaon of the world. May the Holy Spirit, Who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month s intenons as proposed by the Holy Father. The Pope s Intenon for February is for Religious Sisters and Consecrated Women We pray for religious sisters and consecrated women; thanking them for their mission and their courage; may they connue to find new responses to the challenges of our mes. 6 Feb. 6, 2022
