Statistikken for folkehogskolane er utarbeidd på grunnlag av eit nytt skjema, mens oppgåvene for realskolar og gymnas er publiserte etter same opplegg som året før. PREFACE This publication contains statistics on folk high schools and secondary schools as per October 97. The statistics on folk high schools are based on a new questionnaire, but the statistics on secondary schools appear in the same way as for the previous year. The Central Bureau of Statistics also issues these publications in the serial Educational Statistics: Primary and Continuation Schools, Matriculation Examinations, Vocational Schools and Colleges, Universities, Education Finished and Adult Education and Popular Education. 7 PRINSIPP OG DEFINISJONAR. FolkehOgskolar Statistikken omfattar alle skolar som går inn under lova om folkehogskolar av 8. juli 99, det vil seie fylkesskolar, folkehogskolar og private ungdomsskolar som kan få rikstilskot. Som i lova, er namnet folkehogskolar her brukt som ei fellesnemning på desse tre skoleslaga. Statistikken gjeld berre utdanning på hovudkursa, som alle varar om lag eitt skoleår. Kortare kurs er ikkje medrekna. Til statistikken er det frå kvar skole henta inn summariske oppgåver over talet på sokjarar, talet på sokjarar som fekk tilbod om plass, talet på søkjarar som trekteseg etter å ha fått tilbod om plass, talet på elevar og talet på lærarar pr.. oktober. Dessutan har ein på skjemaet spurt om alderen til elevane pr.. desember, høgste allmennskole, bustad og kven som eig skolane. Dersom ein ungdom har sokt fleire folkehogskolar samstundes, er han talt med i statistikken ein gong for kvar skole. Det same gjeld tilbod om plass. Vidare er både dei som blei tekne opp med ein gong og dei som seinare blei kalla inn frå ventelista med i talet på søkjarar som fekk tilbod om plass. Som sokjarar har ein berre rekna med dei som fylte krava for opptak på skolen. SpOrsmålet om lærarar er utforma i samsvar med lov om utdanningskrav for lærarar av 6. juni 96 med seinare endringar. Rektor og vikarar er og tekne med, men ikkje permitterte lærarar.. Realskolar og gymnas Statistikken over realskolar og gymnas pr.. oktober i teljingsåret er publisert i to delar. FOrste del omfattar skolar som etter Standard for næringsgruppering erdefinerte som realskolar og gymnas. I tillegg til talet på skolar gir ein oversikt over lærarar og elevar ved desse skolane. Andre del omfattar alle elevar som får realskole og gymnasutdanning, utan omsyn til kva slag skolar som gir undervisninga. Talet på klasser med slik undervisning er også teke med i statistikken. For gymnasutdanning gjeld tala berre elevar som følgjer undervisninga i alle fag med sikte på å fullfore utdanninga etter i hogda år. For realskole og gymnasutdanning har skolane nytta skjemaet "Elever, klasser og lærere i hogre allmennskoler pr.. oktober". For anna utdanning har skolane nytta anten skjemaet "Elevar og klasser i grunnskolen pr.. oktober" eller skjemaet "Elever og lærere pr.. oktober". Dei skjema som er nytta er tekne med som vedlegg til publikasjonen. Som realskolar er rekna skolar der fleirtalet av elevane får realskoleutdanning, med unntak for skolar med både realskole og ungdomsskoleutdanning. Slike skolar er no rekna som ungdomsskolar, mens dei tidlegare også bleitaldemed som realskolar. Som gymnas er rekna alle skolar der fleirtalet av elevane får gymnasutdanning. Handelsgymnas med fleirtalet av elevane på okonomisk gymnas er derfor tekne med som gymnas. Tidlegare blei alle handelsgymnas rekna som fag og yrkesskolar. Elevar som tar gymnasutdanning (også Økonomisk gymnas) ved andre skolar enn dei som etter dette blir rekna som gymnas, blir tekne med i del av statistikken. Klasser og elevar er i publikasjonen grupperte på desse seks klassesteg: Klassesteg A:. klasse i treårig realskole Klassesteg B:. klasse i treårig realskole,. klasse i toårig realskole Klassesteg C: Avgangsklasse i realskole Klassesteg D:. klasse i treårig gymnas Klassesteg E:. klasse i treirig gymnas og. klasse i toårig gymnas Klassesteg F: Avgangsklasse i gymnas Utdanning som blir gitt på klassesteg AC er rekna som realskoleutdanning, og undervisning på klassesteg DF er gruppert som gymnasutdanning. Skolane er ogsåbedne om A gi oppgåver over talet på sokjarar til lågaste klasse i realskole og gymnas. Statistikken over sokjarar omfattar også dei som har trekt seg etter å ha fått tilbod om elevplass. Talet på sokjarar er derfor bruttotal, og dei utrekna opptaksprosentane er lågare enn dei faktiske.

8 Det ligg ikkje fore oppgåver over kor mange sokjarar som blei tekne opp som elevar ved den enkelte skolen, og talet på elevar på lågaste kalssesteg er derfor nytta som mål for talet på opptekne ved skolen. "Lågaste klassesteg" vil variere frå skole til skole. Som nemnt ovanfor vil ein på klassesteg B i statistikken ha med elevar i. klasse i toårig realskole, mens klassesteg A nyttast for elevar i. klasse i treårig realskole. Klassesteg E omfattar elevar i. klasse i toårig gymnas, mens klassesteg D nyttast for elevar i. klasse i treårig gymnas. Tala på elevar i lågaste klasse i tabell 6 er derfor ikkje dei same som talet på elevar på klassesteg A og klassesteg D elles i publikasjonen. SpOrsmåla om lærarar er laga i samsvar med lov om utdanningskrav for lærarar av 6. juni 96 med seinare endringar. Rektorar og inspektørar er tekne med. Det same gjeld vikarar, men ikkje permitterte lærarar. Av di statistikken for realskolar og gymnas er lagt om frå og med 97, er tala ikkje samanliknbare med oppgåver for tidlegare år.

9 PRINCrPLES AND DEFINITIONS. Folk high schools The statistics relate to all schools covered by the Folk High School Act of 8 July 99, i.e. county schools, folk high schools and similar Statesubsidized private schools. As in the law, the name folk high schools has in this publication been used as a collective name for these three types of schools. Included in the statistics are only major courses of a duration of usually one school year. Shorter courses are not included. Each school has sent in summary data on number of applicants, number of applicants who were accepted, number of applicants withdrawing after being accepted, number of pupils and number of teachers as per October. In addition to these details, the questionnaire contains questions as to age of pupils as per December highest general education, domicile etc. When a person has sent in an application to several folk high schools at the same time, he is included in the statistics once for each school. This is also the case as to number of applicants accepted. The number of applicants accepted includes persons accepted at once as well as persons summoned according to the waiting list. The number of applicants only includes persons who fulfill the conditions prescribed for admission into the school. The question in respect of teachers has been framed in accordance with the law regarding claims for education of teachers of 6 June with later amendments. Included are the headmaster and the substitute teachers, but not teachers on leave.. Secondary schools The statistics on secondary schools as per October of the census year are published in two parts. The first part includes schools which according to Standard for industrial classification are classified as secondary schools. In addition to the number of schools the statistics also contain a survey of the teachers and pupils at these schools. The second part includes all pupils receiving secondary schools education regardless of the kind of school in charge of the teaching. The statistics also give the number of school classes receiving such education. For secondary schools, upper stage, the figures only refer to pupils attending the teaching in all subjects aiming at a completion of the education after a maximum of years. For the secondary schools teaching the schools have used the questionnaire "Pupils, classes and teachers in secondary schools as at October". For other education the schools have used either the questionnaire "Number of pupils and classes etc. in the primary school, upper stage, as at October" or the questionnaire "Pupils and teachers as at October". The questionnaires used are added as appendices in the publication. The secondary schools, lower stage, are schools in which the majority of the pupils receive secondary schools education, lower stage, with the exception of schools with both secondary schools education and primary schools education. The latter schools are classified as primary schools, whereas those schools previously were considered as secondary schools, lower stage. The secondary schools, upper stage, are schools in which the majority of the pupils receive secondary schools education, upper stage. Commercial secondary schools where the majority of the pupils study economics, are consequently classified as secondary schools, upper stage. Previously all commercial secondary schools were classified as vocational schools. Pupils aiming at an upper stage education (including economics) at other schools than those defined as secondary schools, upper stage, are included in part of the statistics. The classes and pupils are in this publication classified according to the following six grades: Grade A:. class of a years lower stage course Grade B:. class of a years lower stage course,. class of a years lower stage course Grade C: Final year of a lower stage course

0 Grade D:. class of a years upper stage course Grade E:. class of a years upper stage course and. class of a years upper stage course Grade F: Final year of an upper stage course Teaching given in grades AC is classified as secondary school, lower stage, and teaching in grades DF as upper stage. The schools are also requested to furnish information on number of applicants to the lowest classes both to lower stage and upper stage of the secondary education. The data on applicants also include applicants who have withdrawn their application after being accepted as pupils. Consequently the number of applicants refers to the gross figures, and the percentage figures for pupils accepted are lower than the actual figures. There are no available figures as to number of applicants accepted as pupils at each single school, and the number of pupils accepted at the school is therefore based on number of pupils of the lowest grade. "Lowest grade" varies from school to school. As already mentioned grade B in the statistics includes pupils in the first class of the two years lower stage, whereas grade A is used for pupils in the first class of the three years lower stage course. Grade E includes pupils in the first class of the two years upper stage course, whereas grade D is used for pupils in the first class of the three years upper stage course. Number of pupils in the lowest class in table 6 is therefore not the same as number of pupils of grade A and grade D in other parts of the publication. The questions regarding teachers have been selected in accordance with law on claims for education of teachers of 6 May 96 with later amendments. School headmasters and principal teachers are included. Included are also supply teachers, but not teachers on leave. As the statistics for secondary schools have been changed and rearranged beginning 97 the figures are not comparable with figures for previous years.
