Forord For 10 år siden utga Statistisk Sentralbyrå «Statistiske oversikter 1948». Publikasjonen inneholdt de viktigste statistiske serier så langt tilbake som det var mulig å skaffe tallene. Tilsvarende publikasjoner hadde Byrået tidligere utgitt i 1914 og 1926. I 1948- utgaven var tallene stort sett ført fram til 1947. Denne utgaven er formet som et tillegg til utgaven fra 1948. Den inneholder tall for alle etterkrigsår fram til 1957. For sammenlikningens skyld er også tall for ett førkrigsår (1938) tatt med i alle serier. Alle tabeller som inneholder videreføringer av serier fra 1948-utgaven, har tabellnummeret fra 1948-utgaven gitt i parentes. Omlegging av statistikken gjør at en del tabeller fra 1948-utgaven ikke lenger kan føres videre i uforandret form. Hvor dette er tilfelle, er nye tabeller tatt inn i stedet. Også en del helt nye tabeller har kommet til i denne utgaven. I disse er tallene ført så langt tilbake som mulig. Bortsett fra at avsnittet «Nasjonalregnskap» er flyttet helt bakerst, er inndelingen av stoffet om lag som i 1948-utgaven. Tabellene er vesentlig utarbeidd på grunnlag av tall i offisielle statistiske publikasjoner supplert med opplysninger fra offentlige og private institusjoner. Preface 10 years ago The Central Bureau of Stati3tics presented "Statistical Survey 1948". This survey contained the most important series of Norwegian statistics as far back as available figures would allow. Previously, similar volumes had been published in 1914 and 1926. The 1948-edition had figures up to and including 1947 for the majority of series. The present edition represents a supplement to the 1948-edition. It contains data for all post-war years up to and including 1957. For the purpose of comparison data for one pre-war year (1938) have been included in most series. For all tables giving series which can be considered direct extensions of the series in the 1948-edition, the table numbers of the corresponding tables in the 1948-edition are given within brackets. However, due to conceptual changes in the statistics, some series of the 1948 edition can not be continued in their original form. In such cases the old tables have been replaced by new ones in the present edition. Even some entirely new tables have been added. The lay-out of the present volume is essentially the same as that of the 1948 edition, only the chapter on national income statistics has been moved to the end. The tables have been prepared chiefly on the basis of data from official statistical publications supplemented by information from other institutions.
