Hello Students at the University College of South-East Norway! I am an international student from Jamaica. I am applying for the position of International Officer in the Executive Committee of the Student democracy in South-East Norway (HSN). This position gives our students the opportunity to influence our school s policy on internationalization in higher education both for both Norwegians studying abroad and for Norwegian and international students who study here. I have worked previously as a volunteer and as international officer in the executive committee of the previous Student Parliament in Buskerud and Vestfold (aug'14-mar'15). Before that, I have also worked as a national leader for International Student Union in Norway (ISU). What I will do: Aug'16: Coordination with the Buddy Program for International students so that Norwegian and international students are mixed together at the beginning of the semester to enhance integration. Oct'16: Participate in International Student Union in Norway's National meeting in Oslo with the local international officer + ISU leadership from each. HSN Career Day '16: Work with the International Office to develop a stand manned by Norwegian students who have studied abroad as a measure to increase interest to study abroad. Work to develop measures that will increase the possibility for international students to gain employment in Norway.
Nov'16: International Students Day: Plan, market and implement along with ISU and local campus international officer to promote internationalization at HSN s campuses. Mars'17: Attend Norway s Internationalization in HIgher Education Conference. This is where upcoming policy is being discussed. Nov'16 - Feb'17: Developing an International Platform for the student parliament that, once voted on, can be used in future years as a policy guide for others who will follow in the office. Students International Help Fund (SAIH) has a "Students At Risk" scholarship program that supports students outside Norway that have been politically oppressed so that they can complete their education in Norway. I want to investigate HSN s possible participation in this program. Fortell hvorfor nettopp du egner deg I Studentdemokratiet: Why I think I am good for this job? My previous experience and results in this position (aug'14- mars'15) I successfully worked against the introduction of tuition fees (skolepenger) for international students in Norway. I coordinated between our local ISU branches at the different campuses, NSO (Norwegian Student Organization) and other student parliments in the country. I attended rallies in Oslo, bringing along our ISU presidents; and participated in the planning and implementation of International Students Day in November 17 as a nation wide movement supporting our cause. I also translated and distributed into English much of the early articles that came up in the newspapers so that international students in Norway could understand and participate in the discussion, representing themselves. I led cooperation between the international officers of four campus and their ISU presidents. The inclusion of international students in the general student body begins here is my opinion. Coordinated ISU election in aug'14 and jan'15 and then supported ISU leaders with their financial applications and participation of student politics in Norway. Translating part of a student parliament its website into English. Other relevant experience: I was a member of the International Committee of the Student Parliament in Oslo that developed an inclusion policy within its international platform. This was cited as one of the best practices, within the national student and was copied into similar platforms across the country. As two-time national president for ISU Norway some of our successes were the complete removal of a 1100Kr work permit fee from UDI (now you get it automatically with your student permit), increased funding from the Ministry of Education, the promotion of the use of English on Norwegian campuses and the strengthening of cooperation between local ISU local branches and their student parliaments. For this work I was awarded the Internationalization Prize from the Student Parliament in Oslo.
