Duke scored over 40 points for the fourth time under Cutcliffe, including a touchdown on their fi rst offensive possession. The Blue Devils racked up 542 yards of total offense with 350 coming through the air and 192 on the ground. Sean Renfree made his starting debut and completed 31-of-39 pass attempts for 350 yards and two touchdowns. Two wide receivers went over 100 yards on the day with Conner Vernon catching 10 passes for 129 yards and Donovan Varner fi nishing with seven grabs for 123 yards. Three running backs scored touchdowns after the Blue Devils only had two rushing scores from the running back position a year ago. The defense had two interceptions on the day, giving Duke a +2 turnover margin to open the season. Duke also had two sacks on the evening. BLUE DEVILS ISP SPORTS NETWORK A state-wide radio audience follows all the action of Duke football on The Blue Devils ISP Sports Network. The network provides in-depth pregame coverage, live play-by-play of all the action, and the post-game press conferences straight from the locker room to stations via satellite each game. The one-hour tailgate show is hosted by John Roth. Two-time Broadcaster of the Year Bob Harris, the voice of the Blue Devils for the past 34 seasons, calls all the action for Duke fans each game. He was inducted into the Stanly County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Analyst Wes Chesson joins Harris in the booth each game and is in his 31st season providing color commentary for Duke games. Chesson, an All-ACC receiver at Duke from 1968-70, still holds fi ve school receiving records, hauling in 164 catches for 2,399 yards during his playing days. He went on to play with the NFL s Atlanta Falcons (1971-73) and Philadelphia Eagles (1973-74). In December of 2000, Harris and Chesson were selected to work the 64th annual Shrine Bowl Game of the Carolinas in Charlotte, N.C. Anthony Dilweg, the 1988 ACC Player of the Year, joins the broadcast team for his 12th season, serving as the sideline reporter with a keen inside perspective. Game 1 - Duke vs. - Sept. 11, DUKE VS. WAKE FOREST Saturday s game will mark the 91st on the gridiron between the two schools, with Duke holding a 53-35-2 all-time series advantage. The series began in 1889 with a 32-0 win. Duke won 15-of-16 between 1931-47 and 16-of-17 between 1952-69. The Demon Deacons have won 10 straight including last year s 45-34 decision. Per Mapquest, Duke and are separated by just 82.1 miles. 30+ POINTS BUT NO WINS VS. WAKE FOREST In the David Cutcliffe Era, the Blue Devils have scored 30 or more points in 10 games, yielding a 7-3 record. Two of the three defeats have come against Wake Forest, with the Demon Decons winning in overtime by a 33-30 count in 2008 and by a 45-34 margin last year. As a head coach, Cutcliffe is 35-9 in games scoring 30 or more points. During his tenure as offensive coordinator at Tennessee, the Volunteers posted a record of 59-3 when scoring 30+ points. DUKE-WAKE GENERATIONS Fathers of two Duke freshmen Brandon Braxton and Braxton Deaver played together at. The 1998 team recorded 575 yards of total offense with 303 passing yards and 272 rushing yards. The Elon game marked the second time under Cutcliffe that the Blue Devils have had over 500 yards of total offense. Last season they had 502 (459 pass, 85 rush) against N.C. State in a 49-28 win. The 350 passing yards against the Phoenix give Duke 300 or more passing yards in 10 games under Cutcliffe. The 192 rushing yards are the third most under Cutcliffe behind 233 yards on 41 carries last season against N.C. Central and 218 yards on 48 attempts against James Madison in 2008. DUKE COMMITS ZERO TURNOVERS The Blue Devils were turnover free in the opener while intercepting two passes for a +2 turnover margin. Duke is one of 18 teams in the nation to not commit a single turnover in the fi rst week and ranks tied for seventh nationally in turnover margin. QB Brandon Connette and RB Josh Snead both enrolled at Duke in January and played against Elon. Connette did not attempt a pass but did have a 48-yard run at the end of the game. Game 2 - Duke vs. - Sept. 11, SCOTT SCORES FIRST TD OF SEASON Sophomore running back Desmond Scott took his fi fth carry of the game 34 yards for a touchdown on Duke s opening drive of the Elon game. On the fi rst drive, Scott had fi ve rushes for 52 yards. He went on to fi nish the game as the team s leading rusher with 77 yards on 15 carries. His touchdown was the second of his career. Game 2 - Duke vs. - Sept. 11, KELLY APPROACHING 1,000 YARDS Senior wide receiver Austin Kelly is only 20 yards away from becoming the 30th player in school history with 1,000 career receiving yards. Kelly had three catches for 27 yards against Elon and now has at least two catches in 13 straight games. VARNER AND VERNON CONVERT 3RD DOWNS In the season opener against Elon, Vernon became a go-to player on third down. Four of his 10 receptions came on third down with all four resulting in fi rst downs. Overall, eight of his 10 catches resulted in fi rst downs for the Blue Devils offense. Junior safety Matt Daniels had his second career interception. He also had an interception at Tech in 2008. Redshirt senior linebacker Abraham Kromah tallied his fi rst career interception to set up a Duke touchdown in the fourth quarter. It marked the 13th time in 25 games under Cutcliffe the Blue Devils caused two or more turnovers. DANIELS ENJOYS GOOD START Daniels got off to a good start to the season with six tackles, one interception and one pass breakup. He is the team s active leader in career tackles (111), interceptions (2) and caused fumbles (3). BUTLER LEADS SQUAD IN TACKLES Junior safety Lee Butler fi nished as the team s leading tackler with nine stops against Elon. The nine tackles were the second most in Butler s career (10 last season at Kansas). Butler led the team with fi ve solo stops and also added two pass breakups on the day. DEFENSE HAS SIX PASS BREAKUPS The defense was active with six pass breakups to go along with the two interceptions. Besides the two pass breakups for Butler, Johnny Williams had two pass breakups in his fi rst season on the defensive side of the ball and Daniels and Chris Rwabukamba each added one. YOUNG-WISEMAN FORCES FUMBLE In his first collegiate game, redshirt freshman Anthony Young-Wiseman stripped the ball from Elon s quarterback Scott Riddle, but the ball went out of bounds. It was the fi rst career caused fumble for Young-Wiseman, who missed all of last season recovering from a knee injury he suffered during summer workouts. Young-Wiseman also added three tackles in his playing debut. CAMPBELL PLAYS WELL Redshirt freshman linebacker August Campbell contributed off the bench against Elon with four tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. Campbell played in just three games last season with two tackles before suffering a shoulder injury. He was granted a hardship waiver from the NCAA and tallied Duke s fi rst sack of the season. DEFENSE CREATES PRESSURE The defensive line and linebacking corps was able to put pressure on Elon quarterback Scott Riddle throughout the fi rst game with two sacks and three quarterback hurries. WILKINSON NAMED ACC LEGEND Former Duke All-America Jay Wilkinson will represent his alma mater as a member of the ACC Football Legends class to be honored at the league s championship game in Charlotte on December 4. A native of Norman, Okla., Wilkinson lettered three seasons (1961-62-63) for the Blue Devils, helping Duke to an overall record of 20-9-1 and ACC championships in both 1961 and 1962. As a senior, he earned fi rst team All-America and ACC Player of the Year honors after leading the conference with 72 points on a school single-season record 12 touchdowns. In addition, he fi nished ninth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy. For his career, Wilkinson amassed 2,753 all-purpose yards with 17 touchdowns and continues to hold school records for punt return yards in a game (160 vs. N.C. State, 1961), punt returns for touchdowns in a season (2 in 1961) and punt returns for touchdowns in a career (3). On Duke s career lists, he continues to rank second in punt returns (65), second in punt return yardage (761) and second in punt return average (11.71).
