Football was introduced at Duke by Dr. John Crowell, who coached then Trinity College to victories in its fi rst two games ever wins of 16-0 and 25-17 over North Carolina in 1888. After the 1894 season, football was banned at Duke by the Board of Trustees, but returned in high form in 1920 when Floyd Egan guided the team to a 4-0-1 ledger. Duke-Richmond Series Duke leads the all-time series with Richmond, 9-2. The Blue Devils won seven straight in the series from 1927 to 1979. The Spiders won the most recent meeting, 13-0 in Durham in 2006, the fi rst game between the two schools in 27 years. Five of Duke s nine victories in the series have been shutouts, including three wins by more than 60 points, 72-0 in 1927, 61-0 in 1943 and 67-0 in 1949. The Blue Devils also earned a 61-7 victory in 1944. In the 11 games between the two schools, Duke has outscored Richmond 408-36. Blue Devils ISP Sports Network A state-wide radio audience follows all the action of Duke football on The Blue Devils ISP Sports Network. The network provides in-depth pregame coverage, live play-by-play of all the action, and the post-game press conferences straight from the locker room to stations via satellite each game. The one-hour tailgate show is hosted by John Roth. Two-time North Carolina Broadcaster of the Year Bob Harris, the voice of the Blue Devils for the past 33 seasons, calls all the action for Duke fans each game. He was inducted into the Stanly County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Analyst Wes Chesson joins Harris in the booth each game and is in his 30th season providing color commentary for Duke games. Chesson, an All-ACC receiver at Duke from 1968-70, still holds fi ve school receiving records, hauling in 164 catches for 2,399 yards during his playing days. He went on to play with the NFL s Atlanta Falcons (1971-73) and Philadelphia Eagles (1973-74). In December of 2000, Harris and Chesson were selected to work the 64th annual Shrine Bowl Game of the Carolinas in Charlotte, N.C. Anthony Dilweg, the 1988 ACC Player of the Year, joins the broadcast team for his 11th season, serving as the sideline reporter with a keen inside perspective. Harper & Ringfield Move To Defense Redshirt junior defensive tackle Brandon Harper moved back to his original position midway through preseason camp after switching to offensive guard this past spring. He has played in 14 career games with two tackles. Redshirt junior Jeremy Ringfi eld moved to defensive end after playing two years as a wide receiver. Ringfi eld had one interception and one sack in Duke s fi rst preseason scrimmage. Defensive Line Blends Experience & Youth The Duke defensive line features a good blend of veteran experience and youth. Two projected starters are seniors with 36 career games played each in Oghobaase and Okpokowuruk. The unit also features redshirt senior Kinney Rucker and redshirt juniors Wesley Oglesby and Patrick Egboh. Those three players have combined for 61 career games played and 18 career starts. Redshirt sophomore Charlie Hatcher, redshirt sophomore Eriks Reks and true freshman John Drew are younger but talented. Hatcher is a sophomore and projected starter, Reks is a sophomore who could see playing time and Drew is a true freshman that is listed second on the depth chart. In the one game without Tauiliili the past two seasons, Rey tallied a career-high 17 tackles against Connecticut. He is Duke s active leader in caused fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (4) and is one of only two Blue Devils in school history, along with John Zuanich, to return two fumbles for touchdowns. Juniors Projected To Start As Outside Linebackers Two juniors, Abraham Kromah and Damian Thornton, are listed as starters on the depth chart for the sam and will linebacker positions. Kromah has played in 20 career games primarliy on special teams and received Duke s Outstanding Special Teams Player Award last season. He has 13 tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack in his career. Thornton has contributed on special teams, playing in 21 career games with eight tackles. Junior Adam Banks could see playing time. He is listed second on the depth chart and has played in 24 games with two starts and 21 tackles. Three Freshman Linebackers Could Play Three of Duke s true freshmen at the linebacker position have all impressed coaches this fall and could see playing time on defense and special teams. On the outside August Campbell and Tyree Glover are listed second on the depth chart. Austin Gamble is listed third at the mike linebacker position. Two Senior Starters In Secondary Returning for their fi nal season at Duke, seniors Leon Wright and Catron Gainey are both listed to start on the left side of the secondary this fall. Wright has started 18 games over the past two seasons at cornerback but missed half of last year due to a leg injury. He has played in 29 career games with 97 tackles, fi ve interceptions and 12 pass breakups. Gainey started 11 of the 12 games last year at safety and has 15 career starts in 35 games played. He has 121 career tackles, one sack, two interceptions and one pass breakup. He was tied for 21st in the ACC last season with 6.2 tackles per game. Wright Among Active Interception Leaders Wright ranks in the top 10 for career interceptions among active players in the ACC. He is tied with Virginia s Ras-I Dowling with fi ve career picks. He recorded 22 tackles to go along with an interception and fumble recovery against Virginia Tech. Rwabukamba s Big Plays Chris Rwabukamba became known for his big plays last season when he sealed a victory over Vanderbilt and made a fourth down stop at Wake Forest. Vanderbilt was driving for the winning score in the fi nal minute but an interception by Rwabukamba at the one-yard line clinched the win for the Blue Devils. Rwabukamba recorded three pass defl ections against Wake Forest, including one on fourth down-and-fi ve at Duke s 33- yard line with three minutes remaining in regulation. Rwabukamba is slated as a backup cornerback this fall and will play with his 20 career games played and three starts under his belt. Freshmen In Secondary Three freshmen could see time in Duke s secondary early this season. Redshirt freshman Jordon Byas brings speed to the safety position as a former 200m and 400m state champion in high school. True freshman Walt Canty has impressed coaches this fall and will play on special teams as well as backing up Matt Daniels. Last season, Maggio made all 28 of his attempts to become one of only three players in Duke history with at least 28 attempts without a miss. As a freshman, he was 13-of-13 on PAT attempts. Williams did not return punts last season, but came out of the preseason on top of the 2009 depth chart. Duke has three other players who returned punts last season, including senior Leon Wright, sophomore Lee Butler and sophomore Donovan Varner. Wright has 38 career returns for 206 yards, Butler has seven punt returns for 53 yards and Varner has four returns for 25 yards. Overtime Duke has played eight overtime games since the NCAA instituted overtime periods in 1996. The Blue Devils own a 2-6 record in overtime games with a 1-4 mark in conference games decided by extra time. The last overtime game for Duke was at Wake Forest on Nov. 1, 2008. The Blue Devils held the Demon Deacons to a fi eld goal but an interception on offense gave Wake Forest the victory. Duke has played three overtime games in Durham and fi ve on the road.
