A fiverun first inning was more than enough to back starter Tim Corcoran (W, 3-3), who fired 6.0 scoreless, four-hit innings and struck out two. The G-Braves jumped all over Mud Hens starter Derek Hankins (L, 1-3) as Ernesto Mejia belted a three-run homer to left and Matt Pagnozzi added a two-run single in the first inning. Todd Cunningham added an RBI as he was hit by a pitch with the bases full in the third, and Corey Wimberly s RBI double chased Hankins in the fifth. Brandon Boggs clubbed a solo home run off reliever Robbie Weinhardt to make it 8-0 in the sixth, and Alden Carrithers made it 9-0 with an RBI double in the seventh. Gwinnett relievers Ryan Buchter, Wirfin Obispo and Juan Cedeno combined on 3.0 scoreless IP in relief, completing the team s fifth shutout win of the season. In the Standings: The G-Braves have won four-straight games, matching their longest winning streak of the season (4-game streak from 4/5 to 4/7, all wins vs. Charlotte). Gwinnett remains alone in third place in the International League South Division, trailing first place Norfolk (31-19) by 10.5 games and second place Durham (30-20) by 9.5 games. The club s.412 winning percentage is still fourthworst in the IL, leading only Rochester (20-30,.400), Charlotte (20-31,.392) and Toledo (15-36,.294). A Breakout Day: The Gwinnett offense matched or established several single-game season highs yesterday. The club tied single-game highs in runs scored (9, also in a 14-9 loss on 5/9 vs. Pawtucket), hits (15, also in a 6-0 win on 4/20 at Charlotte), runs scored in an inning (5, also in the 2 nd inning of a 7-6 win on 5/12 at Scranton/WB) and doubles (5, also on 5/9 vs. Pawtucket). The G-Braves set single-game highs in extra-base hits (7, previous was 6 XBH, accomplished three times) and largest winning margin (9 runs, previous was 8 runs in an 8-0 win on 4/19 vs. Charlotte). Corcoran is IL Pitcher of the Week: Right-hander Tim Corcoran has been named the IL s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending 5/26, announced today by the league office. The 16-year veteran went 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA (1 ER in 11.1 IP), seven walks and nine strikeouts in two starts during the week, including a win vs. Louisville in game two of a doubleheader on 5/21 (5.1 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, season-high 7 K) and yesterday s win over Toledo (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 K). Corcoran is the first Gwinnett pitcher to win an IL weekly award since right-hander Todd Redmond (5/20/12). In nine starts with the G-Braves this year, he s 3-3 with a 3.19 ERA (17 ER in 48.0 IP) and three quality starts. Mighty Mejia: Reigning IL Rookie of the Year Ernesto Mejia tied himself with Rochester s Chris Colabello for the IL home run lead yesterday, blasting his 12 th in the first inning off Toledo righthander Derek Hankins. Mejia extended his team RBI lead to 35 (T-4 th in IL) as a result of the clout, his only hit on the day (1-for-3). Since suffering an 0-for-26 slump (4/30 to 5/8), he s batting.288 (15-for- 52) with three doubles, a triple, four HR, nine runs scored and 12 RBI in his last 15 games. As a result of his recent tear, Mejia is among IL leaders in HR/AB ratio (1 st, 1 HR/13.50 AB), extra-base hits (T-7 th, 21), walks (T-8 th, 26), total bases (T-11 th, 85), slugging percentage (12 th,.525) and OPS (16 th,.879). Heating Up: Brandon Boggs, Todd Cunningham and Joe Leonard all extended hitting streaks to four games yesterday. Boggs went 2-for-5 with his sixth home run of the year (4 th with Gwinnett) the Georgia Tech product is hitting.400 (6-for-15) with two HR and four RBI on the streak, capping a redhot homestand in which he hit.458 (11-for-24) with three HR and eight RBI. Cunningham went 2- for-3 with his seventh double and two RBI yesterday he s batting.500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, two triples, five runs scored and three RBI on the streak, raising his average from.224 to.248. A game after matching his career high with three hits (3-for-4), Leonard extended his streak to a seasonbest four games with a 1-for-5 effort that included his ninth double he s batting.400 (6-for-15) with three doubles, three runs scored and an RBI on the streak, raising his average from.187 to.210. Joltin Joey: Joey Terdoslavich went 3-for-4 with his IL-leading 20 th double and 31 st RBI (T-8 th in IL) on Saturday night the effort was his team-leading 20 th multi-hit game and sixth three-hit game this season. He s currently eighth in the IL in hitting with a.330 batting average and is tied for the league lead in hits (63) and extra-base hits (29). 2 NOTES, ETC. Monday, May 27, Syracuse Page 2 Walden on Rehab: Atlanta Braves right-hander Jordan Walden will join the G-Braves for a minor league injury rehab assignment, beginning tonight. Walden has been on Atlanta s 15-day disabled list since 5/12 with right shoulder inflammation he is 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA (7 ER in 13.0 IP) in 14 games this year. The Braves acquired Walden from the Los Angeles Angels on 11/30/12 in exchange for former G-Brave, RHP Tommy Hanson. Between the Angels and Braves, Walden is a career 9-9 with a 3.24 ERA and 34 saves in 137 games. Blank Men: With yesterday s 9-0 win, the G-Braves improve to an IL-best 5-0 in shutout games this season. Gwinnett has also won 8-0 at Charlotte on 4/19 (Omar Poveda, 7.0 IP), 6-0 at Charlotte on 4/20 (Daniel Rodriguez, 6.0 IP), 1-0 vs. Charlotte on 4/22 (Yohan Flande, 6.0 IP) and 1-0 at Louisville on 4/25 (Rodriguez, 6.1 IP). Atlanta signed the 29-year-old outfielder on 5/22 he had hit.346 (9-for-26) with no extra-base hits and two RBI in 26 games with Campeche of the Mexican League after being released by the Chicago White Sox on 4/4. Since rejoining the G-Braves, he s batting.375 (3-for-8) with a double, run scored and RBI in 240 career games with Gwinnett, he s batting.257 (220-for-857) with 51 doubles, a triple, 45 HR and 147 RBI. Gilmartin Gets On Track: Sean Gilmartin turned in his fourth quality start and ended a three-start losing streak on Friday night vs. Toledo, improving to 3-3 he matched his season high with six strikeouts and established a new season high for pitches (102 total, 67 strikes) the win was his first since 4/26 at Louisville (8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER in 2-1 victory). After going 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA (8 ER in 30.0 IP) in five starts in April, the left-hander had been 0-3 with a 7.98 ERA (13 ER in 14.2 IP) in three starts in May prior to Friday s outing. Omarvelous: Tonight s starter, right-hander Omar Poveda turned in his seventh-straight quality start and team-leading eighth quality start overall in his last outing on 5/21 vs. Louisville. He fell to 3-3 with the loss despite limiting the Bats to three runs on four hits over 7.0 IP, his eighth outing of 6.0-plus innings and fewer than four earned runs this year. Poveda is 3-3 with a 2.26 ERA (13 ER in 51.2 IP) in his last seven games, lowering his ERA from 3.27 to 2.52 (2 nd lowest in the IL). The Maracia, Venezuela native also ranks among IL pitching leaders in WHIP (1 st, 0.97), fewest baserunners per 9.0 IP for starters (2 nd, 9.05), opponent batting average (3 rd,.200) and innings pitched (T-5 th, 60.2). Braves on Rehab: Aside from Walden, six other members of Atlanta s 40- man roster have spent rehab stints in Gwinnett this season. Shortstop Paul Janish (left shoulder surgery) spent two rehab assignments with the G-Braves (4/15-4/24, 5/3-5/10) prior to being optioned to the club. Rasmus went 1-1 in 19 relief outings with the G-Braves, leading the bullpen in ERA (0.93) and saves (7-for-7) he led all IL relievers in opponent average (.123) and appearances (19) at the time of his promotion. His time in Triple-A included a season-best four-game winning streak from 7/27/12 to 8/13/12. The Culiacan, Mexico native will face both the Syracuse Chiefs and a Washington Nationals affiliate for the first time in his career tomorrow Rodriguez did not face the Chiefs in two outings with Gwinnett last season.
