DAG 1 2 Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 Fredag 5 oktober,- vi ankommer Pisa ca. kl. 13.15 med Norwegian rute DY1822. Vi reiser fra flyplassen Galile Galilei og rett til Piazza del Duoma i Pisa hvor vi ser det skjeve tårn og noen av de andre severdigheter på en av italias mest populare plasser.

Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 DAG 1 3 Fra Pisa til vårt hotell i Colle di val D Elsa, Hotel Arnolfo, er det ca. 100 km og tar 1t 40 min. Vi kjører landlig vei via Volterra.

DAG 1 4 Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 I landsbyen Colle di Val d Elsa, i Hotel Arnolfo, bor vi under vårt besøk i Toscana. Her er det klippet litt info med bilder fra Colle di Val d Elas: People have settled in the area of Colle Val d Elsa since the earliest Eneolithic settlements, dating to the 4th millennium BC, and throughout the Etruscan and the later Roman settlements, but it became a full-scale town at the height of the medieval period, before becoming one of the key sites in the history of the free comuni (boroughs), in the struggles between the Guelfi and the Ghibellini, eventually becoming established later on as an important industrial centre. Colle di Val d Elsa is located in the heart of Tuscany, in a strategic position, close to the cities of Siena, Florence and Volterra, along the route of the old Via Francigena, the medieval highway of long-haul pilgrims travelling to Rome from northern Europe. The town originally developed in three distinct sites, each with different buildings and layout: Il Borgo of Santa Caterina, Il Castello di Piticciano, and Il Piano. The first two settlements are the oldest, and were reserved for the local dominant classes. Situated along the same ridge in an east-west direction, and separated by a large dip or saddle, they look down on the valley below, where the third borgo stands, Il Piano, which is more recent in terms of its development, and which has always been the site of industrial activity. Whilst the area of Colle has major archeological finds, dating to as far back as the 4th millennium BC, the first documents mentioning Colle di Val d Elsa date to the 10th century. However, it was with the end of the 12th century that the town gradually acquired political autonomy and a political identity of its own: the first documented municipal statutes date to 1307. Even in the medieval period the urban zone covered a large area which, as well as the upper part of town, comprised Il Piano which extended along the route of the original gore (water channels). The gore are the artificial water channels supplied by water from the river Elsa, and were built over the centuries starting in the early 13th century, with the presence of numerous buildings which relied on water as a resource, such as water-mills, paper-mills, and fulling-mills. In this sense, the gore were a crucial factor in the town s economy, fostering the development of industrial enterprises. In its history, Colle di Val d Elsa was the setting for frequent military events. Among the most famous of these we would note the battle of 1269 between the Guelfs and the Ghibellines, which had significant repercussions for the political geography of Tuscany, and the siege of the troops of the Duke of Calabria, which took place in 1479 in defense of the territory of Florence, which led first to serious destruction, and later to further reinforcement of the system of fortifications. In the course of the 16th century, Colle di Val d Elsa still gravitated in the orbit of Florence, gradually acquiring more and more power, above all thanks to the Medici family, and to illustrious figures from Colle who looked after administration on behalf of the Prince. After the war of Siena and the formation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, in 1592 with the papal bull of Clement VIII, Colle became the site of a new diocese. In the 16th century, with the Usimbardi family, a new chapter was begun in the history of modern Colle di Val d Elsa. On the threshold of the modern era, paper production was replaced by the new industries of iron and glass. The industrial activity of Colle di val D Elsa was marked above all first by the manufacture of glass and subsequently by the production of lead-crystal glass. Indeed, as far back as the 19th century Colle was described as the Bohemia of Italy, while nowadays it has become a full-scale Crystal Town, making 15% of the world s entire output, and over 95% of Italy s output.

Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 DAG 1 5 Colle di Val d Elsa In Colle, the age of industrialization coincided with the advent of Socialism and periodicals linked to the new political climate, with the appearance of the newspaper La Martinella. A centre of art and culture throughout the 20th century, today the charming town of Colle di Val d Elsa is home to over 20,000 people, with old and modern buildings nestling among the green hills which roll down to the river Elsa. Individuals of international standing who were born here include Arnolfo di Cambio, a sculptor and architect who designed Florence Cathedral, and in more recent times Mino the primitive Maccari, and the writer Romano Bilenchi. DAG 2 6 Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 Lørdag 6. oktober,- en dagstur i Toscana landskap. Denne dag besøker vi de maleriske fjellbyene San Gimignano, Certaldo og Volterra. Ruten er ca. 100 km (se side 15).

Weekendtur DAG 5 til Toscana, oktober 2007 DAG 2 7 Volterra Den gamle etruskerbyen Volterra kneiser på en 550 meter høy topp 30 km sørvest for San Gimignano. Fortezza, det vidstrakte festningsanlegget som danner byens tak, stammer fra 1300- og 1 400-årene. Middelalderhus i gulbrun stein rammer inn Volterras to torg, Piazza dei Priori og Piazza San Giovanni. Palazzo dei Priori (1208), på førstnevnte piazza, er det eldste av disse typiske toskanske rådhusene med toetasjes tårn, vinduer og krenelert brystvern. Ved siden av står Palazzo Pretorio, et solid byggverk med arkader i tre etasjer. Domkirken (12. århundre) og et åttekantet dåpskapell skiller torgene fra hverandre. Kapellets renessansedøpefont er smykket med relieffer av Andrea Sansovino. I Museo Etrusco Guarnacci (Via Don Minzoni 15 på nordsiden av Fortezza) får man et innblikk i byens oldtidshistorie. Samlingen omfatter skulpterte askeurner i tuffstein, alabast og terrakotta som stammer fra ca. 500 f.kr. Den forbløffende bronsestatuetten Ombru defla Sera (kveldens skygge) ble modellert av en ukjent etruskisk billedhugger i 2. århundre.

10 DAG 3 Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 Søndag 7 oktober,- tur langs vinveiene i Chanti distriktet. Vi følger lokalvei til Paggibonsi, og tar vei S429 østover til Castellina (1400 talls slott og gammel byport). Tar A222 nordover til Greve, (stort vinsenter ved elva). Snur og tar A222 sydover og følger ruten nedenfor ut i provinsen. Kartrute neste side. From Greve in Chianti, take the SS222 - also known as the Via Chiantigina - southwards for roughly 1 km, at which point you will see a local road on your left. Take this road, leading in a southeasterly direction through typical Chianti countryside of olive trees and vines, and after about 2km you will come upon Villa Vignamaggio. Here you can stop for a bite to eat and stock up on some wine. Continue eastwards, and after another 2km the road turns south and passes through the pretty village of Lamole, famous for its vin Santo (sweet dessert wine). Just over 2km further south, the road meets the SP118; turn eastwards (the road now becomes the SP112) and continue on this road as it turns south to the tiny village of Volpaia, with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The winery here is particularly good, and you can take a tour of the cellars and try some of the products. Lunch at La Bottega er et must - excellent food and good wine From here it s a 3km journey south along the SP112, passing vineyards and fields full of poppies along the way, to Lo Spiccio. Take the secondary road to the east, which, after a little over 1km, joins the SS429. Continue travelling east on the SS429 for around 6km, at which point you will see a secondary road to the north that soon leads to the remote and beautiful Badia a Coltibuono, which has an excellent restaurant and a shop selling the property s wine. Then go south to Gaiole on 421 (vinsmaking) and northvest back to S421. Visit Radda and then go west to Castellina. Follow A222 south and take a local road (Via Cassia Nord) through Monteriggioni (SP5) back to Colle di Val d Elsa.

DAG Weekendtur 2 til Toscana, oktober 2007 DAG 3 13 Mandag 8 oktober,- vi tar en dagstur til Firenze Vi følger vei SR2 til Firenze, og parkerer ved jernbanestasjonen. Avstanden er ca. 50 km og tar 50 min. Når vi returnerer drar vi opp til parken og utsiktspunktet Piazzale Michelangelo hvor vi har et fantastisk syn over Firenze. Følgene er verdt å sjekke: Med kun en dag i byen må vi prioritere. Topp severdigheter i Firenze er Uffizi gallariet med sin renessansekunst, Duomo plassen, Palazzo Pitti, Porta San Niccolo, Ponte Vecchio, mm. Forslag til turrute (se oppmerking på kart): Begin in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, overlooked by its grand gothic Basilica di Santa Maria Novella. Take Via de Cerretani east and you will soon see the breathtaking Duomo and baptistery. Take a spin around Piazza del Duomo, then walk southwards along Via Roma, on into Piazza della Repubblica, an ideal spot for a coffee. Just beyond the square, turn left (east) into Via Orsanmichele, where you ll find the Chiesa di Orsanmichele with its ornate statue. Turn right to follow Via de Calzaiuoli southwards as far as Piazza della Signoria with its Loggia della Signoria and the commanding presence of the Palazzo Vecchio, home of Florentine government since the Middle Ages. South just a few steps is the Uffizi Gallery, housing one of the world s most precious collections of primarily Renaissance art. Piazza degli Uffici leads on to the River Arno. To the west you will see the Ponte Vecchio, lined with glittering jewellery shops. Cross this bridge, which offers wonderful views up and down stream, and you will be in the Oltrarno district. Continue south along Via de Guicciardini as far as the brooding hulk of Palazzo Pitti, one-time seat of the Medici dynasty. Returning to the river and Ponte Vecchio, head upstream along altogether quieter Via de Bardi as far as Piazza de Mozzi, surrounded by grand residences, and continue along Via de San Viccolo as far as Porta San Niccolo, one of Florence s few surviving city gates. Behind the gate, a steep, winding footpath leads up to Piazzale Michelangelo with its breathtaking panorama over the city. From here, barely five minutes more of sturdy uphill work along Viale Galileo Galilei brings you to the Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte, a Romanesque jewel and fitting end to your exertions.

DAG 5 16 Weekendtur til Toscana, oktober 2007 Tirsdag 9 oktober,- dagstur til Siena. Vi kjører vei RA3 (Firenze - Siena) til Siena. Avstanden er ca. 25 km og tar ca. 30 min. Med kun en dag I Siena bør man ta tiden til hjelp i de bratte gatene, unne seg en pust i bakken på en sval gårdsplass, og nyte et pikant måltid akkompagnert av en god Chianti fra stedet. Og mellom to siestaer kan man oppleve noen av Toscanas fineste monumenter. Vi starter på Piazza del Campo - i oldtiden et romersk forum og i dag skueplass for Paliorittene - som sprer seg ut i en storslått skrånende vifte. Plassens brolegning i rødt fiskebensmønster er gjennomstrømmet av ni marmorstriper, en for hver av de ni patrisierklanene som styrte byen i slutten av 1200-årene. Piazzaens arkadeprydede gotiske Palazzo Pubblico og dets mer enn 100 meter høye tårn tar seg best ut i de sene ettermiddagstimene når de gløder i «brent siena» - nyt synet over en drink på plassens skyggeside. Inne i tårnet fører en trapp opp til den første avsatsen 88 meter over bakken, hvor det er et flott utsyn over byen. Loggiaen ved foten av tårnet er et kapell (Cappella di Piazza) til minne om befrielsen fra pesten i 1348. Sienas Duomo (12.-14. århundre), sørvest for Piazza del Campo, er etter manges mening den flotteste av Italias gotiske katedraler. Fargerikdommen og den innlagte marmorens karakteristiske svarte og hvite stripemønster og de tre rikt ornamenterte portalene representerer kvintessensen italie nernes forkjærlighet for det maleriske fremfor bare arkitektur. Og den glødende fargen er ren siena. Det samme svarte og hvite stripemønstret i marmor går igjen i interiøret, mens marmorfliser dekker gulvet med 56 bilder med bibelske og allegoriske motiver, skapt gjennom to hundre år av et førtitalls kunstnere, hvorav Domenico Beccafumi og Bernardino Pinturicchio er de best kjente. I domens venstre tverrskip står en praktfull åttekantet prekestol dekorert av Nicola og Giovanni Pisano og Arnolfo di Cambio. Blant motivene fra Det nye testamente viser Dommedag groteske detaljer av fordømte som spises levende. Libreria Piccolomini (inngang ved venstre sideskip), kardinal Francesco Todeschini Piccolominis bibliotek, er dekorert med Pinturicchios handlingsmettede fresker fra pave Pius 2.s (født Enea Silvio de Piccolomini) liv (kardinal Francesco ble selv kronet som pave Pius 3., men satt bare i ti dager). Ta deg tid til en time eller to blant den sienesiske billedkunsten i Palazzo Buonsignoris Pinacoteca Nazionale sørøst for domkirken. Galleriet er først og fremst viet arbeider av 1300-årenes store renessansemestere.
