Please respond on all questions Task 1, Level of measurement, queries and coordinate systems (35%) In table 1 you will find a subset of a database on famous tourist attractions around the world. Each of the attractions can be identified with an ID and a Name. Further on, the attractions are classified by TypeID and a corresponding TypeName, and they can be located by the variables Location, Country, Longitude and Latitude. The two last rows of the table show when the coordinates were updated (CoordYear) and the change in the percent of visitors at the attractions from 2011 to 2012 (VC2011-2012). Table 1, Subset of a tourist attraction database ID Name TypeID TypeName Location Country Longitude Latitude Coord Year* 6 The Eiffel tower 2 Tower Paris France 48 51'29.6''N 2 14'40.2''E 2014 91 CN Tower 2 Tower Toronto Canada 43 38'33.36"N 79 23'13.56''W 2012 Leaning Tower of 1 Pisa 2 Tower Pisa Italy 43 43'23''N 10 23'47.1''E 2012 Acropolis of 2 Athens 4 Citadel Athens Greece 37 58' 17.1"N 23 43' 34.197"E 2004 19 Fort George 4 Citadel Halifax Canada 44 38'51''N 63 34'49''W 2007 Niagara Canada/ 25 Niagara Falls 9 Fall River USA 43 04 48 N 79 04 29 W 2003 Sidney Opera 67 House 6 Building Sidney Australia 33 51'31.2''S 151 12'50.5E 2013 Washington 16 The White House 6 Building D.C. VC 2011-2012** (%) 12.5 b) At which level of measurement are the variables TypeID, CoordYear and VC2011-2012? Explain. c) What is the difference between a geographic coordinate system and a projected coordinate system? d) What coordinate system is used to represent the different tourist attractions? Explain. e) Write and illustrate the Boolean operator you would use to select attractions that are towers in the USA. f) Write and illustrate the Boolean operator you would use to select attractions that are towers or located in the USA. g) Formulate a SQL expression that selects all tourist attractions for which the coordinates have been updated after 2012. h) Formulate a SQL expression that selects all tourist attractions for which the coordinates have been updated after 2010 and that have increased the number of visitors from 2011 to 2012. 9.7 2.5-3.8 1.1-0.7 7.8 16.4 Page 2 of 3
Task 2, Aerial photos, satellite imagery and remote sensing (15%) a) Describe the difference between an active and a passive sensor. b) What are the benefits of looking beyond the visual part of the electromagnetic spectrum? Give examples. Task 3, A GIS project (50%) You are a GIS expert in a large project where you are going to find a suitable place for a large shopping centre in the city Vestsund. The project is still under planning, and for you as a GIS expert the planning for GIS model has started. The GIS relevant demands for the potential plot are: The plot size should be at least 25,000 square meters and with slope less than 5 It must be possible to connect to the existing road infrastructure within 500m radius The soil conditions must withstand the load of the building and the construction of work. That is, the centre cannot be built on quick clay or marsh. The centre must be located at least 1 km from Vestersund s famous and protected deciduous forest a) Your task is to create a model/diagram where you set up relevant data (input layers), GISoperations and results that are pertinent to the GIS context of this project. The response should also include a textual description of the model/diagram explaining the data (input layers) and the processes and operations that would be appropriate to use to find a suitable building site for the shopping centre. b) Describe the problems that can arise in the process from planning to implementation of the GIS part of this project.
