Kjønnssortering av spermier Seminar om forskning på hanngris 16. April 2009 Peer Ola Hofmo, Norsvin
Hvor står vi i dag? Accuracy of sexing is around 90% in most species. However, this technology is still rather expensive, and fertility of sexed sperm is lower than unsexed controls in most instances (Seidel 2009). in cattle: millions of doses of sexed sperm are sold each year for artificial insemination (Seidel, 2009). More than 90% of lambs born were of the predicted sex (Beilby et al., 2009). analysis confirmed purities of 94% and 83% for X- and Y- chromosome bearing sperm, respectively Sperm sorting technology can be applied to domestic cats and kittens of predetermined sex can be produced (Pope et al., 2009). However, several factors currently limit implementation of sexing technology in pigs (Vazquez et al., 2009).
Omtrent der vi var for 5 år siden To date the only successful method to sort sperm into X- and Y-chromosome-bearing populations is the Beltsville Sperm Sexing Technology (Rath et al., 2009). The sort rate of 8000 sperms per sec corresponds to a production capacity of approximately 14 straws of each sex per hour per instrument (Sharpe & Evans, 2009) (Gjelder storfe med 2 mill spermier pr dose) Anatomical and physiological features inherent to the female pig, together with the relatively low sperm output of a flow sorter, are the main limitations to widespread use of this technology in pig production systems (Vazquez et al., 2009).

Inseminasjon av purker Inseminasjon i cervix uteri Ant spermier per dose: 2-2.5x10 9 Volum per dose: 70-80 ml Stort kjønnsorgan: 1-2 meter Kan redusere dosen til ca 0,5-1,0x10 9 med intra-uterin ins Likevel ca 90-120 min pr dose Lang brunst, vanskelig å forutsi ovulasjons-tidspunktet

Microbix (www.microbix.com) Microbix' patented product (Sperm Sorting Technology) does not involve genetic modification, and is non-invasive, it will not require regulatory approval. There is no significant large-scale, commercial competition for the technology. The Company has in place focused technology development and field trial programs. Because of the early milestones already achieved, Microbix anticipates its development plan will make market launch possible in 2008.
Microbix Annual Report 2007: As you know, we had a major breakthrough with our Semen Sexing Technology (SST ) during the year. We announced the discovery of specific proteins that would allow female-producing and male-producing sperm cells to be separated. We have also developed the monoclonal antibodies that will be used to commercialize this process. Annual Report 2008: 2008 was witness to very sound and cutting-edge science focused on identifying all identifiable sex specific proteins. This work will continue into mid 2009 when we expect critical benchmark discoveries.
