From our Clergy Team With our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord this weekend, the formal celebration of the Christmas season draws to a close. We now mark the days of the liturgical year with what the Church calls Ordinary Time, the six or so weeks until Lent begins. However, it s a bit of a misnomer. There s really nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. In our Gospel readings during Ordinary Time we hear the stories of Jesus as he traveled throughout the land teaching, healing, and forgiving. While he encountered others in a way just like we do, there was nothing ordinary about the ways Jesus went about doing the Father s will on earth. Instead, Jesus ministered with extraordinary peace, compassion, and mercy so that others would come to know the powerful love of God. To find the extraordinary in the ordinary of our life is a great way to grow in faith. We don t need to travel across the world to search for the needy and help them. Maybe there s someone we pass on the street each day who could simply use a smile and a kind word. As Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) once said, not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. It s amazing how God seeks to reach out to us in the ordinary moments of our lives. A beautiful sunset, a loving conversation with a friend, the peace of a quiet moment in prayer, or the joy of a family dinner can all stir up in our hearts a great trust in God s work in our midst. Yet, it can be so easy to miss the extraordinary work of God in these moments because we can often take those familiar things for granted. We should never take the love of God for granted, however, as it gives purpose and encouragement to our lives and increases our trust in God and the amazing things he works in our lives. As we enjoy these days of Ordinary Time let us look for the ways in which God desires them to be extraordinary. What gifts is God stirring up in our hearts that will allow our seemingly ordinary lives to reflect his extraordinary power and love? May we be open to recognize them and share them fully. God bless! Fr. Nick SPECIAL CANDLELIGHT MASS FOR THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD On Saturday, February 1 st there will be a special Candlelight Mass in the Strip District for the Vigil of the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast is the unofficial end of the Christmas Season as it marks the final mystery in the life of the child Jesus as Mary and Joseph present him in the temple, as all Jewish families would have done with their firstborn son. It was at this time that Jesus is revealed by the prophet Simeon as the Light of the Nations, and so the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is the traditional day on which candles are blessed for use in churches. The schedule will be as follows: 7:15 p.m. Gather at Old Saint Patrick Church (Liberty Avenue at 17 th Street in the Strip) 7:30 p.m. Blessing of Candles and Candlelight Process to Saint Stanislaus Kostka 8:00 p.m. Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord 9:00 p.m. AllNight Adoration Begins at Saint Stanislaus Kostka

The third reason is to be our model of holiness. All of Jesus words and actions model for us what we ought to do. He also shows us how we re meant to be. Jesus baptism ought to remind us of our own baptism and of the importance of baptism in the Christian life. The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity. When we are baptized, we stand in solidarity with Christ, bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims our adoption into the family of God. This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased. And the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit s grace and power to continue Christ s mission on earth. We received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through sanctifying grace. We can and should invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and consider them in our own lives. Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand years in the past? Or do you see him as someone who can be encountered here and now? Ask yourself where you find your sense of dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in success, social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to rest in being a beloved child of God? Remember, baptism gives us a call and a charge to change the world. Do you pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you? Or are you so focused on your own life that you miss the mission? This week, let s do as Jesus did. Let s live in our baptism!
