AUGUST 11, 2019 Fr. Mark Brauer, Pastor NOTES FROM THE PASTOR NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. Luke 12:37 This coming Thursday, August 15, is the day that Catholics celebrate what is called the Dormition (falling asleep) or Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is the oldest Marian feast, which celebrates both the happy departure of Mary from this life by her natural death and her assumption into heaven. The Assumption, as well as the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, is a principal feast of Mary the Mother of God and a Holy Day of Obligation. The Assumption is one of the most important feasts of the Church Year. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the special place that Mary, the Mother of God has in the life of the Church. This place is first of all defined by her being chosen to be the mother of Jesus, his only human parent. This alone gives her a uniqueness which is shared by no other person who has ever lived. On May 1, 1946, Pope Pius XII asked all bishops in the world whether they thought this belief in the assumption of Mary into heaven should be defined as a proposition of faith, and whether they with their clergy and people desired the definition. Almost all the bishops replied in the affirmative. There is a difference, of course, between the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven after His Resurrection and the Assumption of Mary. To ascend is to rise up under one s own power while to be assumed means something that is done to one. Jesus, being the Second Person of the Trinity, had no need of assistance, whereas Mary did not have this power. The Feast of the Assumption has always been loved very much by the faithful who are children of Mary. It is a sign to us that someday, through God s grace and our efforts, we too may join the Mother of God in giving glory to God. The Assumption is a source of great hope for us because it points the way for all followers of Christ who imitate her fidelity and obedience to God s will. Peace. Fr. B C V A Justin Williams shared the following reflection on his role as an RCIA sponsor this year: This RCIA journey has allowed me to be more involved and present with my faith. As much as it [was] important for Doug for me to be his sponsor, I feel that it has been equally important and impactful for me as a Catholic to be here. I have been more attentive to my faith. I have been more patient and understanding in my life outside of RCIA as well. I find myself in a more reflective state with my decisions and I genuinely feel like I am living a better life now because of it. I truly feel blessed that Doug chose me to be on this journey with him and I am excited to have this be a springboard for my devotion to God and faith going forward. For more information about the Catholic faith or about becoming Catholic, contact Sharon Williams at swilliams@olsorrows.com or call the Parish Office to reach her at 248.474.5720. SERVE WITH US C S V N New Committee: Circle of Support Organizational/Informational Meeting Tuesday, August 13, 7:00 PM Family Center, Room 1 We are establishing a new committee at Our Lady of Sorrows to provide support to any parishioners or neighbors who may be at risk of forced exportation from the United States by ICE (Immigration Control Enforcement). The immigration laws of the U.S. haven t changed but are being more aggressively enforced. This committee will also educate parishioners about immigration issues, the treatment of new immigrants living in our area, and the Church s doctrine on immigration, as well as advocate for changes to our immigration laws. This new committee is called OLS Circle of Support and is part of the Christian Service Commission. There are about 30 other parish Circles of Support across the Archdiocese, the closest being at St. Regis in Birmingham. These are part of a larger organization called Strangers No Longer. Strangers No Longer also provides training to parish Circle of Support groups, in addition to pro bono attorneys and subject matter experts on immigration. If you are interested in this program, or would like to find out more, please come to the meeting. Tom Kyle, Chairperson 248.987.2223 tom.j.kyle.1939@gmail.com We are in need of one or more parishioners to take Holy Communion and perform a short prayer service (worship aid will be provided) for the residents at Farmington Place on Grand River (just west of Power Rd.) once a month on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. The service lasts about 30 minutes. The opportunity to receive Holy Communion is very significant in the lives of our sick and suffering who are unable to join us at Mass. If you are interested in helping, please contact Sharon Williams, Director of Parish Life, at 248.474.5720 or swilliams@olsorrows.com. S S D Christian Service Commission School Supply Collection for Homeless Students August 2425 It s that time of year when we change our focus from lazy summer days to new beginnings in the classroom. For many children it s an exciting time, but for the homeless children in Farmington and Farmington Hills it s a time of uncertainty. They have no funds for school supplies, graduation gowns or senior pictures. Please join us in helping them by donating to our school supply collection. We are looking for basic school supplies, backpacks and cash donations to help cover the costs for senior graduation. If you choose to donate a complete backpack, the cost will be about $40 for a child or $45 for a teen. The collection box will be in the back of church under the school bus the weekend of August 2425. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. For questions call Kim Garry at 248.536.1156. Choose to donate one or more items, or enough items to fill a backpack, or make a cash donation. Thank you!
