Under the terms of the contract, Nike will phase in its exclusive agreement with all Duke Athletics teams over a three-year period beginning in 2008-09. Additionally, all officially licensed Blue Devils merchandise sold by Nike will comply with labor policies consistent with Duke s position on worker s rights. Duke has long been a leader in demanding manufacturers of licensed products protect the rights of workers. In 1997, Duke was the first university in the country to adopt a code of conduct for apparel manufacturers requires licensees, their contractors and sub-contractors to accept independent monitoring of factory working conditions. Two years later, Duke established another standard by requiring its licensees to publicly disclose the names and locations of factories that manufacture Duke items. Duke remains very involved in these issues and committed to ensuring that products bearing its name and/or trademarks are manufactured under decent and humane working conditions. Nike will provide cash compensation annually to the Duke Department of Athletics over the term of the contract. Nike will provide annual funding to local charities of Duke s choice. Each year, one Duke student-athlete will receive a paid internship at Nike headquarters near Beaverton, Ore., beginning in the summer of 2009. - 1 -

The three players in the class combined to win 62 singles matches as freshmen, led by Chris Mengel who went 33-11 and earned ITA Regional Rookie of the Year honors. In the third signing class, Smith picked up his second international recruit with Raphael Hemmeler coming from Switzerland and also signed blue chip recruit Jason Tahir, a top-10 player from New York. During his three seasons as an assistant coach, Smith helped lead Duke to a 49-31 overall record and 23-10 mark in the ACC. Under his tutelage the Blue Devils produced five All-Americas, eight All-ACC selections and one ACC Tournament MVP in just three seasons. In the three seasons, Duke made the NCAA Tournament each year, advancing as far as the round of 16 in 2006. That season the Blue Devils also captured the ACC Tournament Championship with a 4-3 win over Virginia after trailing 3-0 in the match. Led by five seniors, Duke was ranked in the top-10 the entire 2006 season and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the polls on two occasions. Smith also started the Royal Blue Club while he was an assistant coach for Duke, which is a Duke tennis fan club that gives special promotions for men s and women s tennis matches. Smith has also helped the Blue Devils raise money for new indoor and outdoor courts and scoreboards as well as a new video system with cameras on all six indoor and outdoor courts. A native of Hilton Head, S.C., Smith lettered four seasons at Duke from 1998-2001 and now ranks second all-time in school history with 119 career singles victories. He helped the Blue Devils to four-year records of 96-11 overall and an undefeated 32-0 in conference regular season action. From 1998-2001 Duke claimed four ACC Championships, four Top 10 national rankings and three NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearances. Smith finished his career with a 119-37 singles record and 103-47 doubles ledger. A staple in the ITA singles and doubles rankings, Smith was ranked as high as No. 5 in singles in 2001 and No. 5 in doubles in 2000 with Doug Root. He was ranked in the top-10 in singles for four consecutive rankings during his senior season. Smith was a two-time All-America earning the honor in 2000 and 2001. He was named All- ACC three times in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Smith was named the ACC Tournament MVP in the 2000 and 2001 ACC Championship victories. In addition, he was a two-time recipient of the Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award and was named to the ACC s 50th Anniversary Team in 2002. After receiving his bachelor of arts degree in economics from Duke in 2001, Smith played one year of professional tennis. He posted an ATP world ranking of 603 in singles and 723 in doubles before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury in September of 2002. He reached the semifinals at Futures Tournaments in Malibu, Calif., Chetumal, Mexico, and Little Rock, Ark. Following his professional career, Smith worked with the Stan Smith Billy Stearns Tennis Academy, where he served as a coach, camp organizer and academy secretary for three years. He also spent three summers (2003-05) as a full-time fly fishing guide with Alaska West Sportfishing. MEDIA GUIDE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS 2011-12 DUKE MEN S TENNIS Kevin M. White Vice President & Director of Athletics Adjunct Professor of Business Administration St. Joseph s College, 1972 Kevin M. White was named Duke University s vice president and director of athletics on May 31, 2008. He also serves as an adjunct professor of business administration at the university. White, 60, joined the Duke family after leading Notre Dame s athletics program to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom from 2000-08. He also has held a number of prominent national leadership roles within intercollegiate athletics, including his service in 2006-07 as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and in 2005-06 as president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. Guided by the Strategic Plan that was approved by Duke s Board of Trustees in April of 2008, White made an immediate impact on Duke Athletics. In addition to leading the department to unprecedented success in competition, he reshaped the organization into a more efficient and modern department; strengthened ties to both campus and community constituents though consistent outreach efforts; successfully oversaw Duke s fundraising efforts during an economic downturn; completed partnerships with major corporate entities to enhance revenue streams; commissioned a master facilities plan to position Duke well into the 21st Century; and emphasized a stronger commitment to the university s intramural, club and recreational sports programs. Since White s arrival, Duke has captured three NCAA Championships - women s tennis in 2009, men s basketball in 2010 and men s lacrosse in 2010 - and nine ACC titles (three in 2011). On the strength of 14 teams participating in NCAA Championship competition and robust finishes in several sports, Duke ranked fifth in the 2011 Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, which determine an institution s all-around strength in intercollegiate athletics. The fifth-place finish matched Duke s best in the rankings and its 1171.50 points earned were the most in program history. The fifth-place showing marked the eighth consecutive year that Duke has ended among the nation s top 20 programs. In White s three years at Duke, the Blue Devils placed 17th (2009), 10th (2010) and fifth (2011) in the Directors Cup standings. Twenty-three Blue Devil teams ranked among the nation s top 10 teams during the past three seasons with six - men s basketball (2009, 2010, 2011), men s lacrosse (2010) and women s tennis (2009, 2010) - reaching No. 1. In all, 42 Duke teams advanced to NCAA postseason competition the last three seasons. Individually, 89 student-athletes earned All-America, 159 All-ACC and 103 All-Region or District honors the past three years. During White s tenure, Duke boasts seven NCAA individual champions in Juliet Bottorff (outdoor track and field 10k in 2011), Mallory Cecil (women s tennis in 2009), Abby Johnston (threemeter diving in 2011), Nick McCrory (platform diving in 2010 and 2011), and Becca Ward (women s fencing, saber in 2009 and 2011). In 2011, Duke celebrated four individual NCAA and 11 individual ACC titles. Academically, Duke teams continued strong performances under White. In the 2011 spring semester, 25 of 26 Blue Devil varsity teams earned grade point averages of 3.0 or better after 24 of 26 teams achieved the same during the fall of 2010. In two key elements in tracking a department s academic success, Duke ranked among the nation s best again. Duke posted a 97% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and 14 teams achieved a 100% GSR. Fifteen Blue Devil teams were ranked in the top 10% of their respective sport in the most recent Academic Performance Rate (APR) Report, including the men s basketball team that was only one of four national champions from the 2009-10 season included on the list. Duke was one of only three football programs in the ACC to qualify for this recognition and the 95 percent rate posted by the Blue Devils was the secondhighest among FBS teams in the nation. Individually in 2011, senior Dorian Cohen (men s fencing) received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship (one of 26 awarded nationally), while Allie Speidel (women s swimming and diving) was awarded one of 31 Marshall Scholarships in the United States. Three Duke student-athletes were selected CoSIDA Academic All-America, while 16 others received National Scholar-Athlete or Scholar All- America accolades. During the 2010 fall semester, 469 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or better. That number was 462 during the 2011 spring semester. In White s three-year tenure, former women s tennis player Parker Goyer won a Rhodes Scholarship (2009), while track athlete Sally Liu (2009) and Speidel (2011) earned prestigious Marshall Scholarships. Under White, Duke has continued its focus on outreach to the local community. Modeling the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program s commitment to service, learning projects and outreach, close to 500 Duke student-athletes across the department participated in a combined effort of more than 2,000 community service hours (an increase of nearly 600 hours based on activities and events coordinated through and reported to Student-Athlete Development during the 2010-11 year). White s commitment to the overall mission of the university remains clear. In May 2011, Duke Athletics announced that a portion of ticket sales from Blue Devil regular season home sporting events will be directed to the Duke University Libraries. Per White s vision, the Duke Athletics Library Fund will generate significant unrestricted revenue for the Duke University Libraries to support teaching and research across the institution. In 2010-11, nine facility projects were completed, impacting most of Duke s 26 varsity sports. By August 2011, the new Duke Multi-Purpose Fieldhouse, an 80,000 square-foot facility that will house a 120-yard playing surface for the school s football program and other on-campus recreational activities, will be completed. White, who holds a Ph.D. in education, has taught graduate-level classes since 1982 and currently teaches a sports business course in Duke s Fuqua School of Business as part of Duke s MBA program. In August 2003, SI.com (the Sports Illustrated web site) listed White, then at Notre Dame, third in its rankings of the most powerful people in college football. In January 2004, The Sporting News listed him in its Power 100 as third among five names in the front office category (and the lone college athletics director among the 100). White previously served on numerous NCAA committees, including being an ex-officio member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and a member of its Penalty and Rewards subcommittee. For several years, he was a representative with the football Bowl Championship Series. Additionally, White was part of the NCAA Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) that dealt with academics, fiscal reform and student-athlete well-being. Currently, he is the secretary of NCAA Football, a non-profit corporation that acts as the collective voice to promote college football, and serves on the Black Coaches and Administrators Board of Directors. Given his background and success, it is not surprising that 20 current or former directors of athletics were mentored by White. That impressive list includes Jim Sterk of Washington State and San Diego State, Tom Boeh of Ohio University and Fresno State, Ian McCaw of Northeastern, Massachusetts and Baylor, Bruce Van De Velde of Utah State, Iowa State and Louisiana Tech, Herman Frazier previously of Hawaii, Rudy Keeling formerly of Emerson and now commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Scott Devine of St. Mary s College (Md.), Tom Collins of Ball State, Tim Van Alstine of Western Illinois, Mark Wilson of Tennessee Tech, Bubba Cunningham of Ball State and Tulsa, Sandy Barbour (who followed him at Tulane) of California-Berkeley, Jim Phillips of Northern Illinois and Northwestern, Bernard Muir of Georgetown and Delaware, Sandy Hatfield Clubb of Drake, Vic Cegles of Long Beach State, Norwood Teague of Virginia Commonwealth, Bob Bierie previously of Loras College, Greg Capell previously of Loras College, and Boo Corrigan of Army. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2000, White served as athletic director at Arizona State University, Tulane University, the University of Maine and Loras College in Iowa, where he originated the National Catholic Basketball Tournament. Before becoming an administrator, White served as head track and field coach at Southeast Missouri State (1981-82) and assistant cross country and track and field coach at Central Michigan (1976-80). He began his coaching career at Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Fla., coaching cross country and track and assisting in football and wrestling. White earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1983 with an emphasis on higher education administration. In 1985, he completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University s Institute for Educational Management. He earned his master s degree in athletics administration from Central Michigan University in 1976 and his bachelor s degree in business administration in 1972 from St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he also competed as a sprinter. White and his wife, Jane, a former college track and field coach, have five children and nine grandchildren. - 7 -

2011 IN REVIEW 2011-12 DUKE MEN S TENNIS 2010-11 SEASON IN REVIEW 20-WIN SEASON Duke recorded its 21st 20-win season in school history, finishing the 2010-11 campaign with an overall record of 22-9. It marked the second time since 2006 that the Blue Devils reached the 20-win plateau. The squad closed out its ACC slate with a 9-2 ledger to finish tied for second place with North Carolina in the ACC regular season standings. The nine wins tied a school record for the most conference wins in one season with the 2006 and 2010 teams. 20TH-STRAIGHT NCAA TOURNAMENT The Blue Devils were selected for the NCAA Tournament for the 20th consecutive season and 21st time overall in program history. Duke was chosen as a regional host site for the 10th time and welcomed George Washington, Maryland and Michigan to Durham. In the first round, Duke swept George Washington, 4-0, marking the 20th straight year the team has won its first round match. The Blue Devils followed it up by winning their own region with a 4-0 victory over No. 44 Maryland. From there, Duke traveled to Palo Alto, Calif. to face Georgia, the No. 6 team in the nation, in the round of 16. It was the 13th time in school history the Blue Devils reached the round of the 16 and the second occasion since 2006. Duke fell to the Bulldogs, 4-1, to conclude its run in the NCAA Tournament. NCAA INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Senior Reid Carleton and sophomore Henrique Cunha traveled to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete at the NCAA Individual Championships for the second time in each of their respective careers. Cunha was tabbed the No. 8 seed in the singles tournament, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Virginia s Michael Shabaz, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Carleton suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to No. 45 Tennys Sandgren of Tennessee in the first round of action. In doubles, Carleton and Cunha earned the No. 7 seed, advancing to the tournament quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. TWO SELECTED ALL-AMERICA Carleton and Cunha received All-America honors for the second consecutive season, with both earning the accolade in singles and doubles. It marked the 12th time Duke has had two or more players named All-America. There have now been 33 total All-America selections in program history. REGIONAL HONORS Carleton was named the ITA Regional Senior of the Year following the 2010-11 season. The Naples, Fla., native closed out the year ranked No. 9 in the ITA singles poll. He also recorded a career-best 35 singles victories during the season and totaled 102 career singles wins to finish ranked ninth on Duke s career singles victories list. In doubles, Carleton posted a record of 38-7 along with Cunha while advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Championships. Freshman Chris Mengel joined Cunha and Phillip King (2001) as the only Blue Devils to earn ITA Regional Rookie of the Year honors. Mengel finished a standout freshman campaign with a 33-11 ledger in singles and a record of 22-16 in doubles play. His 33 singles victories were tied for the fourth most by a rookie in school history. ACC TOURNAMENT RUN The Blue Devils reached the finals of the ACC Tournament for the second straight season, falling to top-ranked Virginia by a 4-0 margin. The finals appearance was the 15th for the program in the past 21 years. Duke defeated No. 37 Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals and avenged a loss earlier in the season to No. 15 North Carolina in the semifinals, both by 4-0 scores, to reach the championship match. ALL-ACC SELECTIONS Carleton and Cunha were each named to the All-ACC team. Carleton received the third All-ACC selection of his career as he was named to the team in 2008 and 2010, while Cunha picked up his second honor. Duke has now had at least two selections to the All-ACC team 23 times in the last 25 seasons and has had at least one player on the all-conference team every year since the first year it was announced in 1985. PROGRAM RECORDS FALL IN 2011 Duke continued to rewrite the program record book during the 2010-11 season. The Blue Devils matched a school record with nine ACC wins. It was the third time in program history that the squad has gone 9-2 in league play after previously doing so in 2006 and 2010. Carleton became just the third player in school history to join the 100-win club in singles and doubles. He finished his career ranked ninth on Duke s all-time charts with 102 singles wins and second with 117 doubles victories. Mengel totaled 10 singles victories in ACC play to match junior Luke Marchese s program record, which was set during the 2009-10 season. With the 10 ACC wins, Mengel also established a new freshman record, - 19 - passing the previous mark of nine held by Marchese in 2008-09. Cunha tallied a team-best record of 37-10 in singles play to notch the second-most singles victories in a season by a Duke player. The 37 victories were second in school history behind only his 39 wins from one year ago. Cunha also continues to hold the program record for highest singles winning percentage in a career with an overall mark of 76-16 (.826). In doubles, Carleton and Cunha set the school record for career wins by one duo (79-13), breaking the previous mark of 75 held by Peter Ayers and Rob Chess. He is also the first Duke tennis player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He earned ITA All-America honors in 1983 and finished his senior season ranked No. 15 in the nation in singles. The 1983 ACC Tournament MVP, Flur is the only player in Duke history to earn five league flight championships, capturing two singles titles and three doubles crowns. Flur also helped propel Duke to its first ever ACC Team Championship in 1982. The 1982 team also established a school record for wins in a season, compiling a 31-4 mark, and made the program s first appearance in the NCAA Championship. Following his college career, Flur went on to play on the professional tennis tour for six years. His highest ranking was No. 71 in the world in singles and No. 60 in doubles. He played at Wimbledon five times and in the U.S. Open on six occasions. Flur returned to Duke in 1989 to serve as an assistant coach for the men s tennis team. He worked for one season under former coach Steve Strome and two years with Jay Lapidus. During Flur s tenure, the Blue Devil teams compiled a 52-30 record and won one ACC championship. Flur, who was inducted into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, now works as a Certified Financial Planner with The Piedmont Carolinas Group, LLC., in Durham. - 36 -
