Growing Up Duke has one of the youngest teams in the country. Duke s freshman and sophomore classes account for 77% of the team s roster. There are 10 freshmen and 13 sophomores on the team. Of Duke s expected starting lineup, seven of the eight position players are freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore infielders Jordan Betts, Angelo La Bruna, Aaron Cohn, Mark Lumpa and Matt Berezo, sophomore catcher Mike Rosenfeld and sophomore outfielders Anthony D Alessandro and David Perkins have all been in the starting lineup. Freshmen Andy Perez, Grant McCabe and Andrew Istler have all made a significant amount of starts this season. Senior outfielder Will Piwnica-Worms and junior DH Jeff Kremer are the only upperclassmen in the projected starting lineup. Freshmen and sophomore pitchers have accounted for more than 175 of Duke s 264 innings pitched. Stroman A Top Prospect Duke has one of the top pitching prospects in the country in junior RHP Marcus Stroman. Baseball America selected Stroman as a first team Preseason All-American and the top prospect in the ACC. Stroman is 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA this season. He is striking out 13.22 batters per nine innings this year, with a career-high 17 strikeouts against George Washington on March 2. A native of Medford, N.Y. (Patchogue-Medford), Stroman ranked second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings last season, fanning a schoolrecord 12.64 batters per nine. Stroman was listed as the top prospect in the ACC in the Draft by Baseball America and was a preseason pick for National Pitcher of the Year. He was also listed as having the best fastball and breaking ball in the ACC. In a preseason poll of ACC coaches by College Baseball Insider, Stroman was picked as having the best fastball in the ACC and was one of three league pitchers deemed Pitchers you least want to face. Piwnica-Worms Anchors Lineup Senior CF Will Piwnica-Worms will look to cap a productive four-year career at Duke this season. The 6-2, 220-pound outfielder has started 197 games and owns a career.299 batting average. He will be looked to as a key bat in the middle of the order this year. Piwnica-Worms was one of the ACC s top base stealers last season, going 21-for-23 in steal attempts. He is Duke s active leader in nearly every major offensive category. S T O R Y L I N E S Stroman Piling Up Strikeouts Junior Marcus Stroman struck out a career-high 17 batters in seven shutout innings in a 13-2 win over George Washington on March 2. Setting Up The Rotation Duke will use the starting rotation of Marcus Stroman, Trent Swart and Robert Huber for an eighth straight weekend. Stroman, a junior right-hander, is one of the top pitching prospects in the country. Baseball America tabbed him as the No. 1 overall prospect in the ACC. He is 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA in. Stroman struck out a career-high 17 batters against George Washington on March 2. Swart is a freshman LHP from Carlsbad, Calif., who is 3-3 with a 2.25 ERA on the season. Swart struck out a season-high 10 batters against George Washington on March 3. Huber is 3-3 with a 4.11 ERA in. He was named National and ACC Pitcher of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to a 5-2 win over No. 13 Texas during opening weekend. Duke used 11 different starting rotations in their 12 weekend series last season. The Running Game The running game is a key element of Duke s offense as the Blue Devils have stolen 35-of-52 bases at a 67.3 percent success rate in. The team swiped 84 bases in 2011, the seventh most in school history, and its 77.1 percent success rate was the program s second best since 1999. Will Piwnica-Worms ranked sixth in the ACC with 21 steals in 23 tries in 2011. Of the 18 players in the ACC with 10 or more steals, only three had a higher success rate than Piwnica-Worms 91.3 percent. The Blue Devil running game has thrived under seventh-year head coach Sean McNally, coming up successful over 70 percent of the time in six of his seven seasons. Stroman became the eighth Blue Devil to be named ACC pitcher of the week under head coach Sean McNally and pitching coach Sean Snedeker. Duke = Defense Duke has earned the reputation as one of the best defensive teams in the country under head coach Sean McNally. The Blue Devils led the nation in fielding percentage in 2008, posting a.978 mark, and followed that with a school-record.979 fielding percentage in 2009. The top three spots on Duke s single-season fielding percentage list are occupied by teams coached by McNally. Duke also posted a.975 fielding percentage in 2010. From 2008-2010, Duke posted fielding percentages of at least.975 and led the ACC in fielding percentage in two of those seasons. Duke averages just 1.11 errors per game in seven years under McNally. Coaching The Best Duke baseball s all-time batting average list features three players in its top 20 and six in the top 35 that were coached by head coach Sean McNally. In only six years, McNally produced the program s second-best hitter in terms of average in Nate Freiman (2006-09), who hit.356 in four years at Duke while also setting the school s all-time home run record. McNally also mentored standouts Jeremy Gould (10th,.331), Alex Hassan (15th,.322), Matt Williams (25th,.312), Jimmy Gallagher (26th,.310) and Jake Lemmerman (32nd,.302). Freiman, Gallagher, Gould, Hassan and Lemmerman are all playing professional baseball. McNally also appears on the list himself at No. 9 with a.332 career batting average that he posted from 1991-94 at Duke. He holds the school s single-season records for batting average (.408) and slugging percentage (.775) and ranks among the top 10 in career hits, runs, RBI, home runs, triples and slugging percentage. 22 Sean McNally Head Coach 7th Season B.A., History and Political Science Duke, 94 Sean McNally, a 1994 graduate of Duke University, is in his seventh year as head baseball coach. With a philosophy based on the concept of striving for excellence in the classroom, involvement in the community and achievement on the field, McNally has led the program to great success during his tenure. With a 184-181-1 record in his first seven years, McNally has led his alma mater to four winning seasons and in 2009 became the fastest coach in Duke history to reach 100 wins. McNally s 181 victories in seven years trail only Jack Coombs (381) and Steve Traylor (356) on Duke s all-time wins list. McNally coaches the hitters and infielders directly, the same responsibilities he handled at the professional level during his time in player development with the Cleveland Indians. Duke has made steady improvements each year both offensively and defensively under McNally and has quickly earned the reputation as one of the best defensive programs in the nation. Duke has posted fielding percentages of.971 or better in each of the past four seasons, including 2008 when the Blue Devils led the nation with a.978 fielding clip. Duke has committed fewer errors than games played in three seasons thanks to McNally s fundamentalsfirst approach. Offensively, Duke has hit.299 or better in three of McNally s six seasons while stealing bases successfully over 70 percent of the time every year. Duke has also finished with the fewest strikeouts in the ACC in five out of six seasons under McNally. Duke s progression over the past six years has as much to do with coaching as it does with the improved talent brought in during the recruiting process. During McNally s tenure, the Blue Devils have become a mainstay in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft and have had 13 players drafted over the last five seasons. Among that group, Duke has had three players drafted in the first 10 rounds in 2010 fifth-round shortstop Jake Lemmerman, 2008 eighth-round first baseman Nate Freiman and 2007 seventh-round outfielder Jimmy Gallagher. And while Duke s on-the-field accolades have poured in under McNally, the Blue Devils have made an even bigger impact in the classroom and in the community. In 2011, Duke posted a team grade point average of 3.100 and had an in-season GPA of 3.104. Furthermore, the Blue Devils have annually dominated the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, which honors the conference s best student-athletes. Duke has led the ACC in selections to the team in three of the past six years and has amassed an ACC-leading 33 selections to the squad since it was conceived in 2006. Additionally, Duke baseball players have garnered over 100 selections to the ACC Academic Honor Roll over the past six seasons for holding grade point averages over 3.00 for the entire academic year. Among that group is one of the most academically decorated players in Duke baseball history, Academic All-America First Team and ACC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipient Freiman. Freiman, who played at Duke from 2006-09 and ended his career as Duke s all-time home run leader, came to Duke as a pitcher in McNally s first season. After an arm injury in his first and only career pitching appearance ended his prospects on the mound, McNally set out to convert Freiman to a position player. Over the next four years, the 6-foot-8 Freiman made steady improvements as a hitter and fielder and capped his career with a 20-home run campaign in 2009 that vaulted him into the eighth round of the MLB Draft. Freiman is just one example of McNally s expertise in player Head Coaching Career Overall ACC Year School W-L-T Pct. In three seasons as a hitting coach and manager in the Cleveland Indians system at the A and AA levels, McNally mentored numerous future professional players including Ben Francisco (OF, Toronto Blue Jays), Ryan Garko (1B, Texas Rangers), Franklin Gutierrez (OF, Seattle Mariners), Joe Inglett (2B, Houston Astros) and Kevin Kouzmanoff (3B, Kansas City Royals). McNally served as hitting coach for both Burlington (A) and Akron (AA) in the Indians organization before being promoted to manager of the Burlington Indians in 2005. Duke s student-athlete development has extended well beyond the field under McNally. In addition to their success in the classroom, Duke baseball players have also taken on a tremendous community service push every year. Each fall, the Blue Devils split up by class and plan, organize and execute their own community service projects. Past initiatives include Habitat 4 Humanity, visits to the Duke Children s Hospital s Intensive Care Unit, the construction of a baseball field at Forest View Elementary School and Duke University s Read with the Blue Devils project. The entire Duke team has also become heavily involved with the Miracle League of the Triangle, a non-profit organization that allows special-needs children to play baseball on a specially constructed field with the assistance of volunteers. Following his nine-year stint as a professional player and his three-year run as a hitting coach and manager in the Cleveland Indians organization, McNally was named Duke baseball s 24th head coach on July 15, 2005. He immediately set out to rebuild his alma mater s team, which had endured seven straight losing seasons from 1999 to 2005. McNally is married to the former Kim Voyticky, an All-ACC performer in track and field at Duke. The couple has two children, a five-year-old daughter named Michaela and a three-year-old son named Jackson.
