CARAVANSERAI Azerbaijan Land of Fire A land of fire and oil, ancient caravan routes and stories of love, war and great heroes. Azerbaijan has been a dramatic meeting place throughout history. It is crossed by the Silk Road, many great warriors have met in battles and a variety of people have settled down in the region. Caravanserais are safe shelters and meeting places along the trade routes. The country s cultural heritage is represented by beautiful and distinctive arts and crafts, whose development this exhibition follows through several thousand years. Throughout Azerbaijan s history we encounter expressions of the four elements, which played a central part in the old religion of the country: Earth, water, air and fire! In Azerbaijan eternal fire burns naturally in oil and gas, which flows from beneath the earth, and fire has always occupied a central position in people s lives and thoughts. Zarathustra s writings were created here, and in them fire acquired a religious and philosophical framework. You can still experience the sacredness of the fire in the Atashgah Temple, which is built over an eternal flame. The items that are shown in the exhibition carry within them the diversity of the Azerbaijanian culture. Throughout the history the carpets have been an indispensable aspect of the peoples life. Carpet weaving embodies the country s culture and identity in colourful designs. Paintings, photographic art and films from present-day Azerbaijan reflect the world in which the artists live. The art provide us with a picture of how the country expresses itself in the modern age. By combining cultural history and contemporary art, traditional boundaries are broken down. The exhibition Caravanserai, Azerbaijan the Land of Fire is the result of collaboration between the Museum of Archaeology, Stavanger, Museum of History of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan Carpet Museum and Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan Republic. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Statoil and the Freedom of Expression Foundation, Oslo, supports the exhibition.
