Når messing avsinker blir sink som bestanddel i messingen løst opp og det gjenstående materiale består da av porøs kobber og kobberoksid. Metallet kan se uskadd ut med unntak av rødlig missfarging av overflaten. ezincification is a type of selective corrosion. Med mer enn 37% sink i en kobbersink legering får man i tillegg en annen struktur som kalles beta fase. Atomene vil da bli organisert forskjellig fra en rein alfa fase, og noen atomer danner derfor korn av betafase. Andelen beta korn vil øke med økende andel sink. Over 47% sink vil det kun dannes korn i beta fase. Når det gjelder aufoss40 messing er sink andelen 36%. En liten mengde arsen (ca 0,%) innlegeres for å hindre avsinkning av alfa fasen, men alfa korn er vanskeligere å varmpresse enn beta korn. å den andre side lar ikke beta korn seg beskytte fra å avsinke av arsen. Ved varmsmiing av aufoss40 legeringen transformeres metallet til en blanding av alfa og beta korn. egeringen vil da være enkel å varmpresse. Når delen avkjøles igjen, transformeres legeringen nesten helt tilbake til en rein alfa struktur. aufoss40 legeringen inneholder ikke mer enn 3% beta etter en styrt nedkjølingsprosess. Copperzinc alloys with less than 37% zinc are called alphabrasses at room temperature. With more than 37% zinc in a copperzinc alloy, you get an additional structure called beta. The atoms will organise differently than in the alphaphase, and some grains in the metal will be of betaphase. The amount of betaphase increases with the amount of zinc. There is no alphaphase in a brass with more than 47% zinc. In the case of the aufoss40 alloy, the zinccontent is 36%. Addition of a small amount of arsenic to alphabrasses inhibits dezincification, but alphabrasses are not easily hotformed. On the other hand, betabrasses are not protected from dezincification by addition of arsenic. Caused by transformation of the alloy into a mixture of alpha and betabrass when it is heated, aufoss40 is more easily hotformed. When it is cooled, it transforms back, and the aufoss40 alloy still does not contain more than 3% betaphase. 29

Viktig: Sikker tetting oppnås kun når røret har passert 0ringen og er skjøvet helt inn og mutteren trukket til anslag.
