UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet Eksamen i: BIO2 Generell økologi Eksamensdag: Torsdag 13. august Tid for eksamen: 0900-1200 Oppgavesettet er på 4 sider Vedlegg: Ingen Tillatte hjelpemidler: Ingen Kontroller at oppgavesettet er komplett før du begynner å besvare spørsmålene. Denne eksamen teller 70% av sluttkaraktern for kurset. Oppgave 1 teller 50% av denne eksamen. Oppgave 1 1. Læreboka forteller om to typer framgangsmåter for å indikere/påvise hvorvidt to arter konkurrerer med hverandre (interspesifikk konkurranse). 2. a.
3. Figuren nedenfor viser et fasediagram for fem par arter. Nullisoklinen for begge arter er vist i alle tilfeller. a. (a) a.
Forklar hvorfor. Oppgave 3 Hvordan vil stabilitet, forstyrrelser og predasjon/beiting vil kunne påvirke diversitet? Gi begrunnelser og eksempler. Hva legger du i begrepet the ghost of competition past?
UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences Exam in: BIO2 General ecology Day of exam: Monday 8 June Exam hours: 0900-1200 This examination paper consists of 4 pages Appendices: None Permitted materials: None Make sure that your copy of this examination paper is complete before answering. This exam counts 70% of the final grade. Question No. 1 counts 50% of this exam. Question No. 1 I. The book used in the teaching tells about two types of approaches used to indicate/demonstrate whether two species compete with each other or not (interspecific competition). Tell about these approaches and possible difficulties or pitfalls with each method. II. a) One can say that plants and decomposers have a mutualistic relationship. Can you explain how they have such a relationship? b) What is stochiometry? Which role does stochiometry play for decomposers of dead plants and for decomposers of dead animals? What is the role of stochiometry in the relationship between plants and plant decomposers?
III. The figure below shows a phase diagram for five pairs of species. The zero isocline for both species is shown in each graph (sp. = species). a) Describe shortly (one-two sentences per figure): what kind of interaction is there between the species in each of the figures a-e? b) For each of the figures a-d (not e): Do you think the two species will display stable or non-stable dynamics? Shortly, give a reason or your answer. c) In figure b: what will happen with the two species' populations if the zero isocline for species 4 is moved to the right, so it is still vertical but crosses the x axis at 250? What is the biological interpretation of such a movement of the isocline? d) How will you explain the difference between figure c and d? In figure c, what will happen with the two species' populations if the zero isocline for species 6 is moved to the left, so it is still vertical but crosses the x axis at 25? IV. (a) a) In the graph (a) below, the global number of confirmed human cases of "swine influenza" H1N1 from April 26 until May 16 2009 (day 1 = April 26). Graph (b) shows the same numbers, but he number of cases is log-transformed (using the natural logarithm). The two straight lines show a regression for, respectively, day 1-8 and day 14-21. On day 8, you (as a theoretical ecologist) are asked: "What does the data at this time tell about the population development of this virus?" What do you answer? b) On day 21 (May 16), you are asked the same question. What do you answer now? c) The line through the points for day 1-8 has the formula y = 3.25 + 0.45*x, while the line through the points for day 14-21 has the formula y = 6.52 + 0.12*x. What is the biological interpretation of these numbers? You might need some of these calculations: exp(3.25) = 25.8 exp(0.45) = 1.57 exp(6.52) = 678.6 exp(0.12) = 1.13 d) Based on the pattern shown during days 14-21, can you set up a simple ecological one-species model for the population of the virus? e) If the influenza population continues developing as it has during day 14-21, how large part of the population needs to be vaccinated to stop the disease from spreading? (You only need to show how you would make the calculation, you don't need to calculate the actual number.) (b) Number of cases 0 2000 4000 6000 8000 ln(number of cases) 4 5 6 7 8 9 y = 3.25 + 0.45x y = 6.52 5 10 15 20 Day 5 10 15 20 Dag
Question No. 2 Image an ecological community as a continuum spanning out R units along one dimension. What is the niche breath n for a species; the average niche breath n for the community; the niche overlap o for to neighbouring species; and the average niche overlap o for the community? Give a graphical sketch. More room for species in the actual community will occur with: Larger or less R? Larger or less n? Larger or less o? Explain why. Question No. 3 Explain how stability, disturbance and predation/grazing is assumed to affect biodiversity. Provide justifications and examples. What is meant by the ghost of competition past?
