PRINSIPPER OG DEFINISJONER Statistikken over gymnaseksamen omfatter alle oppmeldte til examen artium og eksamen ved i 99. Både oppmeldte til full eksamen, til deleks amen, til tilleggsprøver og til utsatte eller nye prøver ved vår eller høsteksamen er således tatt med i statistikken. Statistikken utarbeides etter to typer oppgaver oppmeldinger til eks amen og meldinger om utfallet av eksamen. Oppmeldingsskjemaet blir dels fylt ut av den oppmeldte og dels av skolen. Skjemaet gir opplysninger om skole, linje, klasse, navn, fødselsdag, måned og år, prøvens art, elevstatus, opptaksgrunnlag og målform. Dessuten er det på oppmeldingsskjemaet bedt om opplysninger om forsørger, bostedskommune, forsørgers yrke og foreldres utdanning. Karakterinnberetningene om utfallet av vår og høsteksamen blir fylt ut av skolene. Begge sett av oppgaver blir av skolene sendt til Gymnasrådet for behandling og kontroll. Deretter blir materialet utlånt til Statistisk Sentralbyrå for statistisk bearbeiding. I publikasjonen gis det opplysninger om fire hovedgrupper av oppmeldte:. Alle oppmeldte. Eksaminander som bestod eksamen med hovedkarakter For alle grupper av oppmeldte er det gitt opplysninger om kjønn, elevstatus, linje og skolefylke. Alle oppmeldte og eksaminander som bestod eksamen med hovedkarakter er dessuten gruppert etter hjemstedsfylke. Opplysninger om alder og eksamensutfallet er gitt for eksaminander oppe til full eksamen og for eksaminander oppe til deleksamen. For eksaminander som bestod med hovedkarakter er det dessuten gitt opplysninger om forsørgers yrke og foreldres utdanning. Telleenheten er den enkelte person i alle tabeller. En oppmeldt eller en eksaminand er således bare telt med en gang i samme tabell, selv om vedkommende har avlagt prøver både ved vårog høsteksamen. Ett unntak er oppgavene i tabell, hvor personene er telt med en gang for hver avlagt prøve. Eksaminandene er i statistikken ført opp med den elevstatus og den type prøve som gjaldt ved oppmeldingen. Fra og med 99 ble det åpnet adgang for privatister til å få utskrevet vitnemål for bestått examen artium eller eksamen ved økonomisk gymnas på grunnlag av deleksamener når prøvene er tatt enkeltvis. Kravet til utfallet av de samlede prøver tatt ved deleksamener er de samme som ellers. Ved delprøveordningen kan eksaminandene "bygge opp" sin gymnaseksamen ved å melde seg til eksamen i de fag de ønsker, uansett rekkefølge og antall. Men dersom det i ett og sa mme fag holdes flere prøver på samme klassetrinn, må disse tas samlet. Således må f.eks. prøvene i norsk hovedstil, norsk tilleggsstil og norsk muntlig tas under ett når eksaminandene tar sikte på vitnemål på grunnlag av deleksamener. Eksaminander kan gå opp i ett fag så mange ganger de ønsker, og hvis eksamen bestås flere ganger, får de beholde den beste karakteren i hvert fag. Ordningen innebærer også at eksaminander som stryker ved ordinær prøve slipper å gå opp til eksamen på nytt i alle avgangsfag. De som stryker kan nå få vitnemål ved å avlegge delprøver ved neste våreksamen i de fag de ikke bestod. Eksaminander som har bestått gymnaseksamen kan ikke få overført karakterer fra senere avlagte deleksamener til vitnemålet. Det er fortsatt anledning til å ta prøve i enkeltfag, altså bare en (eventuelt to) av de prøver som holdes i ett fag. Karakterene fra slike prøver kan imidlertid ikke inngå i eksamensvitnemålet.

Følgende definisjoner er brukt: Elevstatus En inndeling av de oppmeldte i elever og privatister. Oppmeldte til full eksamen fra skoler med eksamensrett er regnet som elever, resten av de oppmeldte er gruppert som privatister. Eksaminander Oppmeldte som møtte til eksamen. Prøvens art Det sondres mellom: I. Full eks amen, det vil si avsluttende eksamen. (Det skilles mellom full eksamen med og uten hovedkarakter). Deleks amen og prøve i enkeltfag. Samlet prøve for. og. klasse, eller forhåndsprøve. Tilleggsprøve (tilleggsprøve for personer med tidligere bestått gymnaseksamen, lærerprøve eller eksamen fra årig teknisk skole). Utsatt prøve (prøve for eksaminander som under tidligere eksamen hadde godkjent forfall). Ny prøve (prøve for eksaminander som ved tidligere eksamen fikk karakterer som måtte forbedres for å kunne få vitnemål om bestått eksamen) Utfallet av eksamen (resultatet ved slutten av året) Det sondres mellom:. Bestått. Utsatt prøve (rett til utsatt prøve året etter). Ny prøve, det vil si kontinuere (rett til ny prøve året etter). Strøket. Tilbakemeldt (trukket seg, ikke møtt) Skolefylke Det fylket som skolen ligger i. Som eksaminandens skole er regnet den skole hvor vedkommende er elev. Privatister uten skolegang er regnet som statistikkført ved den skolen vedkommende har meldt seg til eksamen. Foreldres utdanning Mors og fars høyeste utdanning spesifisert i samsvar med Utkast til Standard for utdanningsgruppering i offentlig norsk statistikk. Hovedforsørgers yrke Yrke spesifisert etter ensiffernivået i Standard for yrkesgruppering i offentlig norsk statistikk.

PRINCIPLES AND DEFINITIONS The statistics on matriculation examinations relate to all persons who in 99 entered for examinations at secondary general schools, upper stage. Included are all entrants for full examination, as well as entrants for part examination, supplementary, postponed or new examinations. The statistics are based on the registers for examination and on the reports of the examination results. The registers for examination are filled in partly by the entrants and partly by the schools. The register gives information about school, branch, grade, name, birthday, month and year, type of examination, status of pupils, basis for entrance and official language. In addition to these details the register for examination demands information as to supporter, municipality of residence, occupation of supporter and education of parents. The reports of the examination results are submitted by the schools. As well the registers for examination as the reports of the examination are sent by the schools to the State Council on Secondary Education for consideration and control. After that the material is lent to the Central Bureau of Statistics for statistical processing. The tables contain information about the following groups of entrants:. All entrants. Examinees present for full examination. Examinees present for part examination. Examinees who passed full examination with a total average of marks For all groups of entrants information is given about sex, status of pupil, branch and school county. In addition all entrants and examinees who passed full examination with a total average of marks are grouped by county of domicile. Information about age and result of examination is given for examinees who passed full examination and for examinees who passed part examination. Further, for examinees who passed full examination, information is given about occupation of supporter and education of parents. In all tables the counting unit is the single person. One examinee is only included once in the same table, even if he has entered both for spring and autumn examination. The statistics in table represent an exception where the persons are counted once for each examination. In the statistics the examinees are entered according to status of pupil and type of examination valid at the time of registration. Beginning 99 private pupils can obtain a testi ony for having passed their matriculation examinations based on part examinations, when the examiltdtions have been passed one by one. The demands for the results of the total examinations passd by means of part examinations are the same as otherwise. As for the part examination arrangement the examinees can "build up" their matriculation examination by entering for examination in the subjects they choose, irrespective of order and number. But in case there will be several examinations on the same level for one subject, these examinations must be passed jointly. Thus, for instance, the written and oral examinations in Norwegian language must be passed jointly when the examinees aim at a testimony based on part examinations. Examinees can enter for examination in one subject as many times as they want and in case the examination has been passed several times they can keep the best mark obtained for each subject. This arrangement also implies that examinees who fail in the ordinary examination are spared to enter for a new leaving examination. Those who fail, can obtain a testimony by passing a part examination next spring in the subjects where they failed. Examinees who have passed matriculation examination cannot claim that marks from part examinations passed later on should be transferred to their testimony. There is still an opportunity to enter for examination in separate subjects, i.e. only one (or two) of the examinations arranged for one subject. The marks from these examinations, however, cannot be transferred to the testimony.

U The following definitions have been used: Status of pupil A dividing of pupils into pupils and private pupils. Pupils entering for full examination belonging to schools having the right of holding examinations are regarded as pupils, the rest is grouped as private pupils. Examinees Entrants who were present for the examination. Type of examination Distinction is made between:. Full examination, i.e. finishing examination. (Distinctions are made between full examination with or without average marks). Part examination and single subject examination. Total examination for st and nd year or advance examination. Supplementary examination (additional examination for persons who have previously passed the matriculation examination, the examination of a teachers' training college or of a technical school with three years courses). Postponed examination (examination of examinees who at an earlier examination were lawfully prevented from being present). New examination (second time examination of examinees who have to improve their marks for obtaining a matriculation certificate) Result of examination (Result at end of year) Distinction is made between:. Examination passed. Postponed examination (right to a postponed examination the following year). New examination (i.e. right to a new examination the following year). Failed. Registration withdrawn (withdrawn from examination or failure of attendance) County of school The county in which the school is located. The school to which the pupil is attached is referred to as the school of the examinee. Private pupils without school attendance are statistically registered at the school at which they have been entered for examination. Education of parents Highest education of mother and father specified according to Draft of the Norwegian Standard for Classification of Education. Main supporter's occupation Occupation specified according to one digit level of the Norwegian Standard for Classification of Occupations.
