Series The Norwegian Election Research Programme was launched in the middle of the 1950's, under the direction of The Institute for Social Research. Henry Valen and Stein Rokkan were responsible for the programme. The programme co-operated with Norsk Gallup Institute A/S for sample survey data collection in the election studies covering the Storting elections in 1957, 1965, 1969 and Since 1977 the programme has co-operated with Statistics Norway (SSB) for the data collection for these studies. The election studies are intended to give statistical data for research covering elections and political processes in Norway. Since the start of the Norwegian Election Programme Professor Henry Valen has been the key administrator, but in 1985 Bernt Aardal took over as executive manager. Abstract The Norwegian Election Study in 2005 is included in the Election Reserach Program at Institute of Social Research - ISF - ( ). The objective of the study is partly to extend the analyses of earlier elections, partly to study the actual tendencies in Norwegian politics and characteristics of the election to the National Assembly - Stortinget - in Bernt Aardal and Henry Valen have been responsible at IFS for the study. Statistics Norway completed in 2005 a data collection for the Norwegian Election study 2005: ISF has prepared the questionnaires, while SSB has drawn the sample, completed the collection of data and organised the data files. One group was a panel consisted of almost 1500 respondents that also had been interviewed in the Election Study of Due to the number of non-eligible respondents in this sample, it was supplemented by immigrants and younger persons. These respondents constituted thus a "false panel", in contrast to the rest of the respondents that had participated in The second group was cross sectional, around 1500 respondents were drawn randomly. These will contitute the panel for the election in The sample is a so-called rotating panel, meaning that half of the 2001 respondents were also interviewed in 1997, and that these respondents were also contacted in The sample was drawn using Statistics Norway's standard sampling frame for face-to face interviews, which uses random sampling in two stages. The standard sampling frame firstly divides the country into a number of primary sampling areas, which in turn are divided into 109 subpopulations, called strata. The criteria for stratification of primary sampling areas are economic classification, population density and centrality. The aim is to create strata, which are as homogenous as possible, but still geographically concentrated. The primary sampling units are municipalities or aggregates of municipalities. Municipalities with few inhabitants are grouped together with other municipalities to ensure that each sampling area consists of at least 7 per cent of the total number of inhabitants in the stratum the municipality belongs to. All municipalities with more than inhabitants and some with to inhabitants constitute separate strata. The other sampling areas are stratified, within each county, by industrial structure, population density, centrality, patterns of commute and trade, media coverage and communications.
