Traveling to Success at the 2013 Business Expo Get your passports and get ready to travel to the annual SFS Chamber Business Expo on Wednesday, September 18. This annual Expo will once again be held at Heritage Park and will feature over 100 businesses and restaurants showcasing their products and services. This is the perfect opportunity for businesses to advertise to other businesses and to the community at large while promoting the local economy. Participating businesses are encouraged to decorate their booths to celebrate the theme. This year s theme Traveling to Success with the SFS Chamber suggests many variations of decorations. The Expo will be open to the public from 3:00 to 6:00 Friendly Hills Bank won the 2012 Best Themed Table prize. Tamales Guadalajara served samples of their delicious tamales. p.m. and is FREE! Please join us for a great afternoon of music, food samples and local businesses celebrating the Traveling to Success -themed event. Destiny Dinner Proved to Be MISSION POSSIBLE The Marconi Museum was a perfect setting for the 2013 Destiny Dinner where guests wandered among collectible cars while enjoying complimentary wine, beautiful views and a spectacular silent auction. New faces met with those who had founded the Youth Enrichment Fund almost 20 years ago for a lively social gathering. After the cocktail hour and a very competitive silent auction, guests sat down for contests and a delicious dinner. Guests didn t even wait for dinner to be completed before they hit the dance floor! In keeping with the Mission Possible 007 theme, the 007 table was auctioned off to the highest bidder. A very competitive group fought over the rights to have their table named the 007 table, but Brad Pierce of Breit- Burn Energy won the bragging rights! At the end of the evening the raffle drawing was held and the $500 winner was Fire Captain Mike Crook, who generously donated the money back to the Youth Enrichment Fund. Many thanks go to the generous contributors and dinner attendees for enabling the Youth Enrichment Fund to present scholarships to this year s deserving recipients. Jordan King, the 2013 recipient of the $20,000 Destiny Scholarship, will use his scholarship to attend the University of California, San Diego. Mary Ann Talino, who will be attending UCLA for her third year, received the $2,500 Powell Grant. Abel Saldano, who will be attending the University of California, Irvine in the fall received the $1,500 Powell Grant. All proceeds from the event go to the Santa Fe Springs Chamber/League Youth Enrichment Fund which provides programs and scholarships for the youth of Santa Fe Springs. 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Santa Fe Springs BUSINESS August 2013 Page 2 By Lisa Boyajian Ansa Insurance Services August was traditionally the last month of summer when I was growing up. It was four glorious weeks of soaking up the sun on the beach, playing in the pool, summer reading, family barbecues, and going to see a movie at the drive-in theatre on those hot August nights. It was a well known fact this would Building the Framework to Business Success all come to an end the day after Labor Day, when school resumed. Much has changed since then. For those of you asking, What s a drivein theatre? you might visit the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet. Yes, before people came to shop and sell goods at this location, families with kids and teenagers would drive to this very location to watch a movie in their cars. Most of our Destiny and Powell Grant recipients are already preparing to head back to college. If you didn t have an opportunity to meet our exceptional students this year at our Youth Enrichment Fund Destiny Dinner held at the Marconi Automotive Museum, you really missed out. You ll want to be sure and put it on your calendar for next year. August is an important month for the chamber. It is when the new board meets for the annual workshop to discuss implementation and changes with events and programs that are relevant to the needs of the business community. One of these events is the Business Expo on September 18 at Heritage Park. Be sure to contact the chamber if you d like to know more about this business to business event. Another important topic of discussion will continue to be health care reform. Even though the large group mandate has been extended to 2015, there are still rules and regulations that need to be adhered to. We will continue to keep you informed through the Human Resources Forum, which will resume in September and held on the last Tuesday of each month. 3 MEMBER NEWS Volunteer of the Year Award Presented to Betty Sanchez-White Betty Sanchez-White of Popular Community Bank was taken by surprise when Santa Fe Springs Chamber President Mike Foley, Cushman & Wakefield of California, presented her with the 2013 Volunteer of Year Award at the Destiny Dinner held at the spectacular Marconi Automotive Museum. Betty attends the Youth Enrichment Fund Destiny Dinner annually to support the scholarship and youth programs. Her charitable donations of time were recognized by the Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce and her contributions to the chamber exceeded the normal expectations of a volunteer. Betty has worked at Popular Community Bank since She is the branch manager and assistant vice president in Santa Fe Springs. Her bank has a strong commitment to the community and her solid community involvement has enhanced the chamber s programs. She has been an active member and taken Santa Fe Springs Chamber 2013 Volunteer of the Year Betty Sanchez-White, Popular Community Bank part in various youth programs. She has been a high school mentor for several years, served on the Destiny Dinner Committee, golf committee, and is an active ambassador. Popular Community Bank encourages its employees to volunteer for the chamber and community. Outside of the chamber, she is a team member of the Santa Fe Springs Rotary Club and co-chaired the fireworks booth to raise funds for scholarships and leadership camp. She co-leads the bank s efforts in the implementation of a regional partnership in delivering financial literacy to high school students in Santa Fe Springs and Orange County. This is a much deserved award and it could not have been given at a better time as she is also expecting her first baby! The chamber appreciates and congratulates Betty for her incredible efforts. The SFS Chamber/League Youth Enrichment Fund is looking for business people who enjoy having fun and working with high school students. If this sounds like you, then please consider volunteering as a mentor. It doesn t take much time and you will probably find that you enjoy it as much as the students do. Through various activities such as Job Shadow Day, college visits and business breakfasts, you will meet with your student to provide support, counsel, friendship and constructive examples. Every month there is a structured activity for mentors and students to attend. These activities are on weekdays and run approximately two hours. The goal of each activity is to encourage interpersonal skills in the students and to teach them about life and business. Because of the success of the program, the number of students who have signed up for this year has increased by 25, so we need 25 new mentors! The only qualifications for this job is someone who is friendly, enjoys spending time with students, and is willing to be a role model and help a student plan for a successful future. Our mentors have thoroughly enjoyed being mentors and come back year after year. Won t you consider being a mentor and making a difference in just 24 hours a year? For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Division at or visit us on the web at WAPADH Expands Facilities, Services with Opening of New SFS Facility On July 10, WAPADH took a large step into the future with the grand opening celebration of their second facility in Santa Fe Springs. WAPADH Board President Linda Brand cut the ribbon as a large crowd looked on. WAPADH s executive director, Steve Boyer, and California Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon helped do the honors. Longtime Santa Fe Springs Chamber member WAPADH was presented with congratulatory certificates from the chamber and California State Assembly. Challenged by accelerating enrollments for their services due to the increase in autism diagnosis and a decrease in government support, WA- PADH s board of directors launched a three-year strategic expansion resulting in an increase in service resources. Fueled entirely by significant grants from Southern California foundations and other contributions from donor agencies and individuals, WAPADH leaders prepared the way for future services that better reflect the needs of their growing service user base. Founded in 1969, WAPADH is a private, nonprofit organization that supports individuals with a variety of lifelong disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, Down s syndrome and related medical and/or behavioral disorders. Individuals served in their programs are generally very low income and are of mixed ethnic origin and receive services at no charge to them. WAPADH s core programs are Delta Services, a unique continuing education program serving more than 245 consumers and their families every day; Communication Services (CS) to meet the communication needs of school children without speech with a caseload that has swelled from 45 to 220 children in its first three full years; and housing provided for individuals who live in their own homes (now serving 20 individuals) who require 24-hour support.
