Presentation is basically in the form of tables, figures and necessary information about data, collection and processing methods, and concepts and definitions. In addition, a short overview of the main results is given. The series also includes the publications Statistical Yearbook of Norway, Historical Statistics and Regional Statistics, as well as Standards for Norwegian Statistics and Guide to Norwegian Statistics. Grunnlaget for statistikken Talgrunnlaget til denne publikasjonen er henta delvis frå Statistisk sentralbyrå sine eigne undersøkingar, og delvis frå offentlege og private organisasjonar innanfor kultursektoren. Tala i kapittel 1 (tabellane ), tabellane 2.1, 7.8, , 9.5, 10.9, 11.9, , 13.10, og baserer seg på utvalsundersøkingar. Resten av tala er baserte på fullteljingar innanfor dei ulike områda Omfang Kulturomgrepet som er nytta i denne publikasjonen, inkluderer også område som idrett, kyrkje og annan religiøs aktivitet. Statistikken er delt inn etter emne, fordelt på i alt 17 kapittel og presenterer vesentlege aktørar på kulturområdet. 2. Omgrep og kjennemerke Formidling er eit samleomgrep for tiltak som tek sikte på å nå eit publikum med utstillingar, publikasjonar og aktivitetar. Trussamfunn, slik omgrepet er nytta i denne publikasjonen, er organiserte, religiøse einingar utanfor Den norske kyrkja. Trussamfunn kan vere registrerte eller uregistrerte. Skilnaden er først og fremst at presten eller forstandaren i registrerte trussamfunn har fullmakt til å utøve religiøse handlingar, jf. lov av 13. juni 1969 nr. 25 om trudomssamfunn og ymist anna, 14, 3. ledd. Trussamfunn kan ta imot offentleg stønad. Tala i denne publikasjonen omfattar berre dei einingane som har søkt om slik stønad. Medlemmer som har rett til stønad, er dei som er norske, eller utlendingar busette i Noreg. Medlemmer i slike trussamfunn kan ikkje samstundes vere medlemmer i Den norske kyrkja. Livssynssamfunn er organiserte einingar utanfor Den norske kyrkja, som byggjer verksemda si på eit særskilt livssyn. Medlemmer i slike samfunn kan ta imot offentleg stønad på same vilkår som trussamfunn (sjå ovanfor). Det vert stilt krav om at livssynet ikkje krenkjer rett og sømd, jf. lov av 12. juni 1981 nr. 64 om tilskott til livssynssamfunn, 1, 1. ledd. Per i dag er Human-Etisk Forbund det einaste livssynssamfunnet som tek imot offentleg stønad. Bibliotek er ein organisasjon eller ein del av ein organisasjon som har som hovudmål å halde ved like ei samling. Biblioteket skal også gjere samlinga tilgjengeleg gjennom tenester som er utførde av tilsette for å dekkje brukarane sine behov for ulike dokument knytte til informasjon, forsking, utdanning eller rekreasjon (ISO 2789). Museum er ein ikkje-kommersiell, permanent institusjon som skal tene samfunnet og samfunnsutviklinga. Institusjonen skal vere open for publikum. Eit museum skal samle inn, ta vare på og sikre, forske i, formidle og stille ut materielle vitnemål om menneskja og deira miljø. Formålet er å gjere det mogleg for andre å ha studiar, opplæring og opplevingar der. Presse er ei felles nemning for aviser, vekeblad og tidsskrift som kjem ut regelmessig. Aviser vert definerte som regelmessige publikasjonar som formidlar aktuelle nyheiter og andre kunngjeringar av interesse for folk flest. Inndelinga i landsdelar i tabellane 1.1, , 12.9 og er: Oslo/Akershus Austlandet elles omfattar Østfold, Hedmark, Oppland, Buskerud, Vestfold og Telemark Agder/Rogaland omfattar Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder og Rogaland Vestlandet omfattar Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane og Møre og Romsdal Trøndelag omfattar Sør-Trøndelag og Nord- Trøndelag Nord-Noreg omfattar Nordland, Troms og Finnmark. Moglege feilkjelder i denne statistikken vil først og fremst vere at oppgåvegjevarane har gjeve mangelfulle eller feilaktige opplysningar. Feil kan også ha oppstått i arbeidet med materialet i Statistisk sentralbyrå. 4. Nokre hovudresultat Kulturaktivitetar Kino og idrettsarrangement er dei mest besøkte kulturtilboda. Kvar for seg oppgav 65 og 57 prosent at dei hadde nytta slike tilbod dei 12 siste månadene. Dei kulturtilboda som hadde lågast besøkstal, er ballett- og operaframsyningar, der ballett har 11 prosent og opera 6 prosent. Forbruksundersøkingane Forbruksundersøkingane frå synte at folk jamnt over brukte kroner per år til fritids- og kulturformål. Dette utgjorde (i 1999-kroner) 8,8 prosent av den totale utgifta til forbruk. Heime-PC og tipping, lotteri og andre spel utgjorde dei største utgiftsgruppene. Utgifter til kulturformål Utgifter til kulturformål over Kulturdepartementet sitt budsjett utgjorde millionar kroner i Brutto driftsutgifter til kulturformål i kommunane utgjorde i alt millionar kroner. Den største delen av dette, 40,0 prosent, gjekk til idrett, friluftsliv og andre mosjonsaktivitetar. Kunstnarar Det vart i alt gjeve snautt 37 millionar kroner i stipend frå Statens kunsterstipend i Det vart delt ut 557 stipend. Scenekunst I overkant av 1,5 millionar personar besøkte framsyningane ved teater og opera i I alt vart det halde framsyningar. I tillegg kjem turnéframsyningane, framsyningar med i alt tilskodarar, og framsyningar for born og ungdom med i alt tilskodarar. Det var i alt tilsette ved desse institusjonane, av dei hadde 33,5 prosent kunstnariske stillingar. Idrett og friluftsliv Det var i alt registrert 1,6 millionar medlemskap i Norges Idrettsforbund og Olympiske komité i Av dei var 63 prosent 20 år eller eldre. Organisert bedriftsidrett var den største gruppa, med i alt medlemmer. Museum og samlingar I alt 9,3 millionar personar besøkte norske museum og samlingar i 2000, av dei var 50,1 prosent betalande. Musea forvaltar i alt nær verneverdige bygningar og 24,0 millionar ulike gjenstandar. Det var i alt 511 museum med i statistikken for 2000, av dei var 416 kulturhistoriske. Bibliotek Utlånet ved folkebiblioteka var i 2000 på 18,4 millionar bind. Det svarer til 4,1 bøker per innbyggjar. I same perioden var utlånet ved skolebiblioteka i grunnskolen på 4,3 millionar bind, som er 9,1 bøker per elev. Statistikken omfattar også fag- og forskingsbiblioteka som totalt hadde 3,8 millionar utlån i Film og kino I 2000 vart det halde framsyningar ved norske kinoar med i alt filmtitlar. 7,1 prosent av framsyningane var av norske filmar, medan 7,6 prosent av filmtitlane var norske. Det var i alt 11,6 millionar tilskodarar ved kinoane. Dette er i gjennomsnitt 2,6 besøk per innbyggjar. Radio og fjernsyn Det var i alt om lag 1,7 millionar fjernsynslisensar i Noreg i NRK1 hadde ei dekning på 98 prosent, medan TV2 dekte 93 prosent av folkemengda. 87 prosent av folkemengda hadde tilgang til tekst-tv. 82 prosent av folkemengda såg på fjernsyn ein gjennomsnittsdag. Tilsvarande tal for radiolytting var 57 prosent. Bøker bøker og 741 småtrykk vart utgjevne i Av dei hadde 66,8 prosent av bøkene norsk originalspråk medan prosenten for småtrykka var 60,1. Aviser og periodika Det var i alt 151 dagsaviser (medlemmer i Norske Avisers Landsforening) i Av dei kom 64 aviser ut 6-7 gonger i veka. Desse 64 avisene hadde eit nettoopplag på 2,3 millionar eksemplar. Det var 9 sundagsaviser/sundagsutgåver, og dei hadde eit samla nettoopplag på eksemplar. Vekepressa hadde eit samla gjennomsnittleg nettosal på vel 2,6 millionar eksemplar i veka i Fagpressa hadde eit samla opplag per utgjeving på 4,3 millionar eksemplar i Trus- og livssynnssamfunn Per 1. januar 2001 var det i alt menigheiter i Noreg som var registrerte og uregistrerte trussamfunn utanfor Den norske kyrkja. Desse menigheitene hadde til saman om lag medlemmer. Dei islamske trussamfunna hadde til saman medlemmer. Livssynssamfunnet Human-Etisk Forbund hadde i alt medlemmer. 16

Statistical basis and collection of data The figures for this publication are partly based on information from Statistics Norway's own surveys and partly from public and private organizations within the Cultural Sector. The figures in chapter 1 (table ), tables 2.1, 7.8, , 9.5, 10.9, 11.9, , 13.10, and table are based on sample surveys. The remaining figures are based on full counting within the various areas Scope The term Culture in this publication also covers areas such as sports, church and other religious activities. The statistics are grouped into topics and divided into 17 chapters. 2. Terms and variables Dissemination is a joint term for measures aiming to reach an audience with exhibitions, publications and activities. Religious communities, as used in this publication, refers to organized religious units, registered or unregistered, outside the Church of Norway. The distinction is primarily that a priest or leader in registered religious communities have authority to practice religious activities, cf. Act of 13 June 1969 nr. 25, about religious communities and various others 14, section 3. Such communities may receive public grants. The figures in this publication only cover the communities that have applied for such grants. Members entitled to grants are those that are Norwegian citizens, or foreigners resident in Norway. Members of religious and philosophical communities may not also be members of the Church of Norway. Philosophical communites are organized units outside the Church of Norway, whose activities are based on a particular philosophy. Members of such communities may receive public grants on the same conditions as religious communities (see above). It is required that the life philosophy should not violate laws and social propriety, cf. Act of 12 June 1981 about central government subsidies to religious and philosophical communities, 1, paragraph 1. At present, Human Ethical Union is the only philosophical community receiving public grants. Library refers to an organization or part of an organization whose principal aim is to maintain a collection. It also makes the collection accessible by employing people to supply services to meet users' needs for various documents related to information, research, education or recreation (ISO 2789). 17

18 Kulturstatistikk 2000 Noregs offisielle statistikk Museum refers to a non-commercial, permanent institution for the benefit and development of the community. The institution should be open to the public. A museum shall collect, maintain and secure, research, distribute and exhibit material reports about people and their environment. The purpose is to make it possible for others to do studies, training and experiences. The Press is a common name for newspapers, weekly magazines and periodicals that are issued on a regular basis. Newspapers are defined as regular publications to disseminate current news and information that are of interest to most people. The regions in tables 1.1, , 12.9 and are: Oslo/Akershus counties Rest of Austlandet (Eastern Norway) includes Østfold, Hedmark, Oppland, Buskerud, Vestfold and Telemark counties Agder/Rogaland covers Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder and Rogaland counties Vestlandet (Western Norway) includes Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal counties Trøndelag includes Sør-Trøndelag and Nord- Trøndelag counties Nord-Noreg (Northern Norway) covers Nordland, Troms and Finnmark counties. In the tables 12.11, 13.10, and occupations are divided into following major groups: 1. Legislators, senior officials and managers 2. Professionals 3. Technicians and associate professionals 4. Clerks 5. Service workers and shop and market sales workers 6. Skilled agricultural and fishery workers 7. Craft and related trades workers 8. Plant and machin operators and assemblers 9. Elementary occupations 0. Armed forces and unspecified 3. Sources of error Any statistical material may contain errors. Possible sources of errors in these statistics are primarily because the institution supplying the data may have given inadequate or wrong information. Errors may also have occurred while the information was being processed at Statistics Norway. 4. Some main results Cultural activities The most chosen cultural events are cinemas and sports activities. 65 and 57 per cent respectively stated that they had attended such events during the past 12 months. The least chosen cultural events are ballet and opera performances, with respectively 11 and 6 per cent. Surveys of consumer expenditure Consumer expenditure surveys from showed that people used an average of kroner on leisure and cultural activities. In 1999 this represented 8.8 per cent of total consumer expenditure. Home PCs, lotteries etc. were the largest expenditure groups. Public expenditure for cultural purposes In the budget of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, expenditure towards cultural purposes amounted to 3 571million kroner in Gross operating expenditure for cultural purposes in the municipalities totalled million kroner. The greatest part of this, 40.0 per cent, went to sports, outdoor activities and other fitness activities. Artists A total of about 37 million kroner was given as Norwegian Goverment Grants for Artist in scholarships were awarded. Performing arts In 2000 about 1.5 million people went to theatre and opera performances. A total of performances were held. In addition, there were tour performances with visitors, children and youth performances with visitors. There were persons employed at these institutions, 33,5 per cent of them were employed in the Arts. Sports and outdoor activities 1.6 million memberships were registered in the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports in per cent of them were 20 years and above. Sports organized by firms or employees, was the largest group with members. Museums and collections 9.3 million people visited Norwegian museums and collections in 2000, of which 50.1 per cent were paying visitors. Museums administrate about buildings deserving preservation and 24.0 million different objects. 511 museums were included in the 2000 statistics, of which 416 were cultural history museums. Libraries In 2000 public libraries lent out 18.4 million volumes, or 4.2 books per inhabitant. In the same period, lending by primary school libraries totalled 4.3 million volumes, 9.1 books per pupil. The statistics also cover 18

These had a total lending of 3.8 million volumes in Film and cinema In 2000, performances were held at Norwegian cinemas with a total of film titles. 7.1 per cent of the perfomances were performances of Norwegian titles, and 7.6 per cent of the film titles were Norwegian. Almost 11.6 million people visited the cinema. This is an average of 2.6 visits per inhabitant. Radio and TV There were 1.7 million Television licences in Norway in NRK1 (National Channel 1) had a coverage of 98 per cent, while Commercial TV2 covered 93 per cent of the population. 87 per cent of the population had access to text-tv. 82 per cent of the population watched television on an average day, while the percentage for radio listening was 57. Facsimile: Newspapers and periodicals In 2000, there were 151 daily newspapers (members of the Norwegian Newspapers National Union). 64 of these were issued 6-7 times a week with a net circulation of 2.3 million copies. There were 9 Sunday issues with a total net circulation of copies. Weekly magazines had a total average net circulation of 2.6 million copies a week in Technical periodicals had a total circulation of 4.3 million copies in the same year. Religious and philosophical communities At 1 January 2001 there was a total of congregations in Norway of registered and unregistered religious and philosophical communities outside the Church of Norway. These congregations had a total of members. Islam was the largest religious community with members. The philosophical community Human Ethical Union had members. Figures for the Church of Norway indicate that in 2000, persons were baptised, confirmed, married and were buried. 19
