6 6 > HISTORY MICHIGAN'S ITA ALL-AMERICANS In addition to leading the Big Ten Conference with 36 league championships, the University of Michigan men's tennis program has also made significant achievements on the national scene. The Wolverines captured their first NCAA title in 1957, led by All-American Barry MacKay, who won U-M's first national singles championship that season. MacKay was also the first of 22 ITA All-Americans in the history of the Michigan men's tennis program. 8 8 > HISTORY MICHIGAN'S NCAA HONORS BARRY MACKAY NCAA SINGLES CHAMPION 1957 MacKay defeated Texas' Sammy Giammalva, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in the championship final to help the Wolverines earn their first NCAA team title in MICHAEL LEACH NCAA SINGLES CHAMPION 1982 A 2007 U-M Hall of Honor inductee, Leach became the first and only unseeded player to win the NCAA Singles Championship when he upset Pepperdine's Brad Gilbert in Brian Hung ( ) was the male recipient of the 2007 NCAA Sportsmanship Award, which honors student-athletes who -- through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate athletics -- have demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship, including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility.
